Job Description

The Director of Wastewater provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the organization’s wastewater treatment facilities, collection systems, and related infrastructure. This position directs safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations; ensures compliance with applicable environmental requirements and discharge permits; manages personnel and financial resources; and oversees maintenance and capital improvements.

The Director works with executive leadership, regulatory agencies, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to protect public health and the environment while supporting current operational needs and long-term infrastructure planning.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish operating priorities, performance expectations, and procedures to maintain reliable service and effective treatment. Analyzes and maintains the effectiveness of the Wastewater System.
  • Provides leadership, direction, and guidance of all Wastewater System activities.
  • Schedules projects for all Wastewater Systems and responsible for overall project management.
  • Investigate operational deficiencies and compliance issues; develop and monitor corrective action plans.
  • Monitor treatment performance, laboratory results, equipment condition, and operational data; direct corrective action when necessary.
  • Establish and maintain departmental safety procedures and emergency response plans.
  • Executes Company policies.
  • Maintains regulatory compliance with all agencies and regulations.
  • Direct and oversee short-term and long-term strategic planning for division.
  • Corresponds with State and local officials pertaining to Wastewater System activities.
  • Reads blueprints and monthly operating reports, business letters, proposals, summaries, and reports.
  • Develops and maintains a preventive maintenance program.
  • Develops and manages annual budgets throughout the year.
  • Oversees preparation of all capital and operational budgets.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and support, set professional development plans to assist employees to reach their full potential.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations regarding operational performance, compliance, staffing, budgets, and infrastructure needs.
  • Monitors all operational policies, procedures, controls, and fee structures to ensure the safekeeping of assets, inventory, and resources.
  • Ensure the team delivers the highest standard of departmental, cross-departmental teamwork and member service.
  • Work closely with all members of the management staff in developing and meeting overall goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate wastewater activities with other departments and external partners.
  • Other duties assigned by the General Manager/COO.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in the wastewater industry with five (5) years’ experience in supervisory role
  • Wastewater Collection Operator certification must be reciprocal or ability to obtain certification within first year of employment.
  • Grade 1 Wastewater treatment plant operator’s license

SAFETY

  • Follow all FGCC safety programs, safety guidelines, policies, and procedures. Wear, use and enforce all FGCC personal protection equipment (PPE) as needed on specific jobs and tasks.
  • Be aware of chemical safety and be familiar with all pertinent Safety Data Sheets (SDS) of chemicals which are used in the workplace.
  • Follow all FGCC safety rules including all local, state, and federal regulations as they pertain to work at FGCC.
  • Participate on Employee Safety Committee and facilitate safety meetings as required.
  • Participates on the Safety and Wellness Committee and coordinates the Risk Management Program along with coordinating safety programs.
