Bouldering Instructor (Part Time) in Kearns, Utah at Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center

Under the direction of the Recreation Program Supervisor, the Bouldering Instructor is responsible for providing instruction, supervision, and safety oversight for participants enrolled in bouldering programs at the Fitness Center. The instructor teaches fundamental bouldering skills and techniques, promotes safe climbing practices, maintains a safe and welcoming climbing environment, and provides positive instruction appropriate to participants’ age and skill level.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

1. Responsible for performing Instructor duties in an effective manner
2. Supervise the conduct of students to prevent unsafe conditions and behavior to deter accidents
3. Prepare lesson plans, evaluations, course records, and reports
4. Participate in the maintenance of daily records relating to accidents
5. Be prepared and ready to start class on time
6. Assist in keeping the bouldering wall and surrounding area neat and organized
7. Report unsafe conditions to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner
8. Assume responsibility for maintaining positive relations with patrons
9. Conduct oneself in a professional manner and dress in proper uniform
10. Assist and support students/parents in a positive and productive manner
11. Respond to the questions and/or concerns of students/parents in a prompt fashion
12. Stay alert and attentive at all times while on duty
13. Responsible for establishing and maintaining effective working relations with personnel and management
14. Attend all staff meetings and in-service training sessions
15. Provide input for the bouldering wall and Recreation area planning
16. Discuss areas of concern with appropriate personnel
17. Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

1. At least 16 years of age
2. Must submit to a criminal background check
3. Ability to communicate effectively with patrons, supervisors, and other employees
4. Excellent bouldering and teaching skills
5. Alert, attentive, and responsible
6. Ability to be a team player
7. Ability to hold all matters related to staff and patrons as confidential and to discuss related matters with only appropriate individuals

Bouldering Instructor Minimum Qualifications (in addition to above qualifications):

1. Demonstrated experience with bouldering and knowledge of basic climbing techniques and safety practices.

2. Ability to safely instruct and supervise participants using an indoor bouldering wall.

3. Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or the ability to obtain certification within 60 days of employment.

4. Bouldering or climbing-wall instructor certification/training preferred; candidates without certification may be required to successfully complete facility-approved bouldering instructor training upon hire.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Willing and available to work early mornings, mid-day, evenings, and weekends.
2. Moderate physical activity including pushing, pulling, and/or lifting medium weights
3. Uncomfortable working positions such as stooping, crouching, and bending
4. May have a few disagreeable elements such as noise, poor ventilation, or extreme or uneven temperatures
5. Must work inside and outside
6. Intermittent exposure to stress
