Job Summary

The Pain Management Infusion Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides clinical and patient care support within an outpatient pain management infusion setting. Working closely with registered nurses, physicians, and other clinical staff, the EMT helps ensure patients receive safe, efficient, and compassionate care before, during, and after treatment.

Responsibilities include patient intake, vital signs, patient observation and monitoring, treatment room preparation, authorized IV-related tasks, documentation, recovery support, and emergency response. The EMT promptly communicates changes in patient condition to the supervising RN or provider and performs assigned duties within applicable scope of practice, documented training, verified competency, and organizational protocols.

Duties/Responsibilities

Patient Intake and Treatment Preparation

  • Greet and room patients, verify patient identity using approved identifiers, and prepare patients for their scheduled treatment.
  • Obtain and accurately document baseline vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and other measurements required by clinic protocols.
  • Obtain and document patient-reported pain score, pain location, symptoms, and other intake information as assigned.
  • Collect patient-reported medication and allergy information and communicate discrepancies or concerns to the RN.
  • Notify the RN of abnormal vital signs, new symptoms, changes in health status, or other concerns before treatment begins.
  • Assist with confirming that required treatment documentation is available and notify clinical staff of missing items.
  • Prepare treatment rooms, chairs, monitoring equipment, and supplies before patient arrival.
  • Assist with patient positioning, comfort, mobility, and accessibility needs.

Infusion Support and Patient Monitoring

  • Assist the RN and treating provider with infusion preparation and patient care activities as assigned.
  • Establish peripheral IV access only when permitted in the practice setting and supported by required training, documented competency, and appropriate clinical authorization.
  • Apply approved monitoring equipment and obtain and record readings at intervals directed by the RN or clinic protocols.
  • Recognize and promptly respond to adverse treatment reactions, decreased oxygen saturation, respiratory distress, changes in responsiveness, abnormal vital signs, monitor alarms, and IV-related complications such as infiltration, leakage, dislodgement, pain, or swelling.
  • Initiate appropriate interventions within the EMT’s authorized scope of practice, documented training, verified competency, and approved clinic protocols. When those protocols authorize an immediate response, begin indicated interventions without waiting for the RN to arrive, while promptly notifying the RN or provider and requesting assistance.
  • Continue monitoring the patient’s response, communicate findings and interventions to the RN or provider, and activate the clinic’s emergency response process when indicated.
  • Accurately document the concern identified, interventions performed, patient response, and notification of the RN or provider.
  • Maintain appropriate safety precautions, including fall prevention and assistance with ambulation.
  • Support a calm, comfortable treatment environment and communicate patient needs to the clinical team.
  • Perform medication-related or infusion equipment tasks only when specifically authorized, legally permitted, and supported by documented competency.

Administrative and Documentation Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned clinical documentation accurately and in a timely manner in the EMR.
  • Schedule appointments, procedures, and follow-up visits as needed.
  • Assist with prior authorizations, referrals, records requests, and coordination of care when assigned.
  • Respond professionally to phone calls and patient messages and route clinical questions and prescription refill requests to the appropriate provider or licensed clinician.
  • Collect or verify insurance and demographic information when needed.
  • Help maintain organized clinical work areas and patient records.

Recovery and Discharge Support

  • Assist with observing patients during recovery and obtain and document required post-treatment vital signs and observations.
  • Report persistent symptoms, abnormal vital signs, impaired mobility, altered responsiveness, or other recovery concerns to the RN or provider.
  • Collect and communicate information used by the RN or provider to determine whether discharge criteria have been met.
  • Assist with discharge after clearance by the authorized RN or provider.
  • Reinforce approved discharge instructions, including transportation arrangements, activity restrictions, fall precautions, and post-treatment safety requirements.
  • Refer clinical questions or requests for individualized medical advice to the RN or provider.
  • Assist patients with safe transfer, ambulation, and departure as needed.

Clinical Documentation and Communication

  • Document care personally performed, vital signs obtained, patient observations, and communications accurately and promptly in the designated medical record.
  • Use assigned electronic health record credentials and follow organizational documentation procedures.
  • Clearly distinguish personally performed care from information reported by the patient or another clinician.
  • Record treatment-related information only as authorized by clinic policy, accurately identifying the clinician who performed or administered the treatment.
  • Promptly communicate significant findings, changes in condition, and actions taken to the supervising RN or provider.
  • Provide clear handoffs when transferring patient care responsibilities.
  • Complete incident reports and other required documentation according to organizational procedures.

Emergency Response and Patient Safety

  • Recognize signs of patient deterioration and immediately activate the clinic’s emergency response process.
  • Provide CPR, AED assistance, and other emergency interventions within current training, certification, and authorized scope.
  • Assist the RN and provider during medical emergencies and support coordination with emergency medical services when directed.
  • Know the location and proper use of emergency equipment and supplies.
  • Complete assigned emergency equipment checks and promptly report missing, expired, damaged, or malfunctioning items.
  • Participate in emergency drills, safety training, and competency assessments.
  • Report patient safety concerns, equipment issues, and near misses promptly.

Infection Prevention and Clinical Readiness

  • Follow hand hygiene, standard precautions, personal protective equipment requirements, and bloodborne pathogen exposure procedures.
  • Clean and disinfect treatment chairs, rooms, equipment, and clinical surfaces between patients according to approved procedures.
  • Handle and dispose of sharps, contaminated materials, and regulated waste appropriately.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and appropriately stocked treatment areas.
  • Monitor supply levels and expiration dates and communicate replenishment needs.
  • Assist with opening and closing duties and preparation for the next clinic day.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Treat patients, caregivers, and coworkers with courtesy, respect, and professionalism.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational privacy requirements.
  • Follow applicable policies, clinical protocols, professional standards, and federal and state requirements.
  • Maintain required certifications and promptly report changes in certification status.
  • Participate in required training, staff meetings, quality improvement activities, and ongoing competency reviews.
  • Provide support at other practice locations as assigned based on patient volume and staffing needs.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with training, competency, and authorized scope of practice.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to obtain and accurately document vital signs and recognize findings requiring prompt clinical attention.
  • Ability to recognize changes in patient condition and communicate concerns clearly and immediately.
  • Knowledge of basic emergency response, CPR, infection prevention, and patient safety practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate clinical documentation.
  • Ability to follow clinical instructions, established protocols, and role boundaries.
  • Compassionate communication with patients experiencing chronic pain, anxiety, or treatment-related discomfort.
  • Ability to prioritize assigned duties while maintaining patient safety.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with nurses, providers, medical assistants, and administrative staff.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn electronic health record systems.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond effectively during urgent situations.
Preferred Experience
  • One year or more of EMT or related direct patient care experience.
  • Experience in an outpatient infusion center, pain management practice, emergency department, or similar clinical setting.
  • Experience assisting with patient monitoring and post-treatment recovery.
  • Documented peripheral IV access training and experience appropriate to the role.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records; eClinicalWorks experience preferred.
  • Experience caring for patients with chronic pain or limited mobility.
  • Spanish speaking strongly preferred.
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of an approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) education program.
  • Current, active Arizona EMT certification in good standing.
  • Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Maintain all required certifications throughout employment and provide updated documentation upon renewal.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and movement throughout clinical areas.
  • Ability to assist with patient positioning, transfers, and ambulation using appropriate assistance and safe handling techniques.
