This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director - Indirect Tax based in the United States.

This is a senior leadership opportunity to own and scale a global indirect tax operating model within a complex technology environment.
You will oversee U.S. sales and use tax, Canada GST, global VAT/GST coordination, e-invoicing, digital reporting, reconciliations, and compliance governance.
The role combines strategic tax leadership with hands-on execution, giving you meaningful ownership over both decisions and outcomes.
You will work across Tax, Finance, IT, Revenue, Billing, Procurement, and regional teams to build scalable and well-controlled processes.
A key focus will be strengthening tax technology governance, integrations, reporting, automation, and readiness for evolving digital tax requirements.
You will also manage external providers, improve operational accountability, and ensure processes remain audit-ready and sustainable.
This remote role is ideal for an experienced indirect tax leader who enjoys solving complex problems and building better systems.

Accountabilities
  • Own the global indirect tax operating model, covering U.S. sales and use tax, Canada GST, VAT/GST coordination, e-invoicing, digital reporting, reconciliations, controls, and compliance governance.
  • Lead U.S. sales tax compliance through an outsourced provider model, managing compliance calendars, data submissions, return reviews, reconciliations, exceptions, issue resolution, and vendor performance.
  • Strengthen monthly sales and use tax reconciliation processes, exception reporting, business intelligence, issue tracking, and escalation procedures.
  • Coordinate global VAT/GST compliance with local tax teams, external advisors, and compliance providers, establishing clear ownership, documentation, controls, and escalation paths.
  • Serve as the Tax owner for global e-invoicing and digital reporting initiatives, partnering with Tax Technology, Finance, IT, local teams, and external advisors as new mandates emerge.
  • Govern indirect tax technology platforms, including tax determination, exemption management, configuration, data flows, issue remediation, and e-invoicing capabilities.
  • Own indirect tax requirements and operational impacts for ERP, billing, revenue, procurement, payment, and other system integrations and business initiatives.
  • Identify and implement improvements across tax processes, reporting, reconciliations, documentation, controls, and automation in partnership with Finance and IT teams.
  • Build scalable documentation, evidence trails, stakeholder routines, and control frameworks to support audits, internal reviews, compliance requirements, and leadership reporting.
  • Manage external compliance providers and ensure service quality, accountability, deliverables, and performance meet established standards.
  • Collaborate effectively across global teams and time zones, including stakeholders in EMEA and India.
  • Provide hands-on leadership when required, balancing technical tax judgment, operational execution, technology governance, and strategic priorities.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required, ideally in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of progressive indirect tax experience.
  • Strong U.S. sales and use tax expertise, including multi-state compliance, reporting, taxability, reconciliations, and audit support.
  • Demonstrated global VAT/GST experience and the ability to coordinate with regional tax teams, advisors, and compliance providers.
  • Experience with e-invoicing, digital reporting, and evolving global indirect tax mandates.
  • Hands-on experience with Avalara AvaTax or a comparable tax engine; experience with related modules is highly desirable.
  • Experience managing outsourced tax compliance providers or similar operating models.
  • Proven ability to manage compliance calendars, data submissions, return reviews, GL reconciliations, issue resolution, and vendor service quality.
  • Strong understanding of ERP, billing, revenue, procurement, and tax-system data flows, including Workday or comparable ERP environments.
  • Experience defining indirect tax requirements for system integrations and broader business initiatives.
  • Strong process improvement, documentation, controls, analytics, and stakeholder-management capabilities.
  • Ability to operate independently at Director level while remaining comfortable with hands-on execution and detailed problem-solving.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex tax requirements into practical processes for Finance, IT, business, and executive stakeholders.
  • Experience working effectively across international teams and multiple time zones.
  • A Master’s degree, CPA, JD, or LLM is preferred.
  • Big Four experience is a plus.
  • Experience within SaaS, software, cloud, or technology environments is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Avalara ECM, ELR, e-invoicing, Workday connectors, ERP-to-tax-engine integrations, Power BI, Alteryx, data analytics, or automation tools is advantageous.
  • A practical, accountable, and collaborative leadership style, with the ability to balance technical judgment, operational delivery, and long-term scalability.
Benefits
  • Annual base salary of $137,126.93–$172,873.06 USD, with actual compensation varying based on location, skills, experience, certifications, and other relevant factors.
  • Eligibility for an annual performance bonus or commission program, depending on the nature of the position.
