Position Summary:
The Operations Manager provides leadership and oversight for Clinical & Operational Support Services team within the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) Plant Operations Department. This position manages the General Services Assistant (GSA) and Materials Management functions and is responsible for ensuring efficient, responsive, and reliable operational support for clinical, research, administrative, and facility activities throughout the Cancer Center.
The Operations Manager oversees day-to-day operations including staffing and work assignments, materials receiving and distribution, internal logistics, patient and staff support services, departmental vehicles, and other operational services necessary to support the functions of a complex outpatient cancer center. The position develops and implements operational procedures, establishes service priorities, monitors service delivery, resolves operational and customer service issues, and identifies opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of departmental operations.
This position provides direct supervision and leadership to staff supporting extended weekday and weekend operations and participates in Plant Operations leadership coverage and the department's on-call rotation. The Operations Manager works collaboratively with Facilities Maintenance, Construction Services, Safety & Security, clinical departments, and other internal and external partners to coordinate services, resolve operational issues, and minimize impacts to patient care and Cancer Center operations.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills, with the ability to manage multiple operational priorities and build effective working relationships across a complex healthcare environment.
The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 136 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico's cancer patients from all across the state. And they partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. In 2024 they treated more than 15,000 patients in almost 105,000 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 2,075 patients participated in cancer clinical trials to study new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 123 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNM Cancer Center were awarded $38.3 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 750 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery.

• Experience with materials management, receiving, inventory control, internal distribution, logistics, or supply-chain support functions.
• Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, evaluating, and improving operational procedures, workflows, service standards, and business processes.
• Experience coordinating multiple operational or service functions and establishing priorities in an environment with competing demands.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to build collaborative working relationships across multiple departments and organizational levels.
• Experience supporting healthcare operations and an understanding of the importance of maintaining continuity of services and minimizing impacts to patient care.
• Experience with budgeting, purchasing, procurement, financial processes, operational reporting, or other administrative management functions.
• Experience coordinating surplus property disposition, asset relinquishment, or similar institutional asset-management processes; experience working with UNM Surplus Property processes is preferred.
• Experience utilizing computerized maintenance/work management systems, such as TMA, for work requests, service coordination, tracking, and operational reporting.
