Position Purpose: The Staff Nurse is accountable for the performance of patient care according to the behaviors and responsibilities as outline in this statement. This position reports to the Manager of the Supplemental Staff and manager of assigned unit.

Clinical

  • Floats between assigned sites and provides nursing care on specific assigned unit by individualizing interventions for patients with problems of a non-routine nature. Site and unit assignment is subject to change routinely.
  • Utilizes the nursing process, identifies complex variables and inter-relationships of the assessment data.

Planning

  • Includes discharge planning needs into plan for care and initiates processes to obtain necessary referrals to assist patient/family and expedite discharge.

Implementation

  • Implements physician and nursing orders as appropriate involving patient, family significant others.
  • Seeks out opportunities to enhance technical competence.
  • Takes appropriate action in anticipation of potential life-threatening or emergency situations.
  • Uses equipment and supplies in a safe and cost efficient manner.
  • Corrects actual or potential incidents of staff, environment, and/or equipment deficiencies.
  • Organizes and prioritizes nursing activities in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Participates actively and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to develop a common approach or to modify health care needs.
  • Guides and apprises ancillary personnel in the performance of technical skills.

Leadership

  • Reinforces to others the principles of “Customer Service” philosophy.
  • Functions in the role of charge nurse.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patients and/or staff members.
  • Demonstrates understanding of professional responsibility extending beyond own patient care assignment.
  • Completes self-evaluation, which demonstrates insight into own strengths and areas for professional development.

Education and Research

  • Actively participates in educational opportunities to meet learning needs of self and other. Develops an awareness of relationship between research and nursing practice.
  • Completes mandatory educational requirements including but not limited to: fire, safety, infection control and CPR.
  • Seeks information about current research or advances in profession by reviewing professional literature and/or attending informational sessions.
  • Attends continuing education programs.
  • Actively participates in unit programs, which provide clinical experiences for students and staff members.
  • Participates in the development of unit specific standards of care.
  • Participates in data collection to support research activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Successful completion of Hospital and Departmental orientation programs
  • 1 year of nursing experience within area of desired practice
  • 1 year experience independent and direct patient care experience

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in EPIC and MEDITECH software systems preferred.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and talk or hear
  • The employee frequently is required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • General office environment and the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate

BLOOD-BORNE PATHOGEN EXPOSURE CATEGORY:

Category 1 - Job usually involves contact with patients or patient’s specimens. Exposure to blood, body fluids, non-intact skin or tissue specimens, is possible

Category 2 - Job may expose incumbent occasionally or in emergency situations to blood, body fluids, non-intact skin or tissue specimens

Category 3 - Job does not involve exposure to blood, body fluids, non-intact skin or tissue specimens. Incumbent does not perform or help in emergency medical care or first aid as a part of his/her job.

Registry (per diem) Caregivers are employees who work less than 1,000 hours in a calendar year but are typically on an as needed basis. These caregivers may be called upon to cover full-time or part-time caregivers during PTO events or sick leave as well as to provide supplemental coverage. Registry Caregivers are not eligible for Sinai’s benefit programs with the exception for City of Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick Leave (Sick-C), PPO Medical Plan, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and non-match eligible contribution to the Sinai Health System Consolidated 403(b) retirement savings plan.
