Duties and Responsibilities
- Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
- Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret the results.
- Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes: pediatric, geriatric and the general population.
- Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment, and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
- Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Family is included in teaching as appropriate.
- Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately based upon ACLS protocol.
- Provides care to patients with compromised nutritional/metabolic status.
- Provides care to patients requiring extensive fluid and electrolyte management.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, co-workers, and physicians.
- Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
- Provides care appropriate to disease condition and age of the patient including pediatric, geriatric and general population.
- Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures both in the SCU and in other departments.
- Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensure patient confidentiality.
- Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
- Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Ability to assess and care for patients in the post anesthesia period, both in the PACU and SCU.
- Employee performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s/department’s ethics and compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor or upward through chain of command, the Compliance Officer, or hospital hotline.
- Employee adheres to and practices the standards of performance outlines in the Standards of Performance handbook.
Regulatory Requirements
- Completes annual educational requirements within the assigned time frame.
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and Joint Commission regulations related to their department and, as appropriate, to the hospital.
- Current state of Florida Registered Nurse Licensure.
- Two or more years of recent critical care experience preferred.
- Successful completion of critical care orientation preferred.
- BLS certification.
- SCU
- ACLS and PALS required within one year.
- PCU
- ACLS and PALS highly recommended.
