About This Position

Sandhills Community College seeks applications for a full-time Criminal Justice Technology Instructor. Instructional duties will include teaching topics in criminal justice using a variety of delivery modes: traditional classroom, online, hybrid, weekend, eight-week, and evening. Additional faculty duties include assisting with student recruitment, advising students, and performing support duties as assigned by the Department Head. Class sessions may take place on a Sandhills Community College campus, or a Moore County or Hoke County high school campus. The ability to integrate with other disciplines and support other public safety programs is a plus. Interviews for the position will include a teaching demonstration.

The duties and responsibilities as directed by the Provost, Vice-Provost, Dean or Department Head include, but are not limited to, the following:

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain positive and professional interpersonal relationships with students, faculty, staff and administration at the college.
  • Support open expression and be sensitive and respectful to others. Respect the confidentiality of information shared during interactions. Discourage any form of harassment, bullying, and/or abrasive behavior directed at colleagues, students, and/or campus visitors.
  • Promote a culture of excellence and caring for faculty and students. Develop professional relationships and show courtesy and respect while working with colleagues, potential donors, alumni, advisees, prospective and current students, and communities of interest.
  • Post and maintain a schedule each semester showing availability as approved by the Department Head.
  • Attend departmental and college meetings as scheduled.
  • Participate in college events and activities.
  • Respond to emails and other communication from students, colleagues, Department Head, Deans, VPs, Vice-Provost, Provost and President in a timely and professional fashion.
    • Participate in annual professional development activities to remain up to date in discipline-specific and instructional advancements.
  • Advise students in the program.

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Abide by the Sandhills Community College Teaching Faculty Policy Agreement.
  • Instruct classes within the assigned program discipline and provide effective and high-quality instruction in accordance with the published course curriculum, with instruction in the classroom and laboratory.
  • Teach courses using assigned delivery modes, which may include traditional classroom, online, hybrid, weekend, eight-week, and evening formats.
  • Prepare, review, and update course outlines on an annual basis, ensuring that course content is up-to-date, relevant, accurate, and consistent with state and national accreditation standards.
  • Maintain accurate academic records of students enrolled in classes and submit reports in a timely manner as required.

Department Responsibilities

  • Assist the Department Head in the preparation of class schedules that allow students the opportunity to complete the program in a timely manner.
  • Assist with the recruitment of new students and support Workforce and Applied Programs engagement initiatives such as Career Exploration events and FunFest.
  • Assist in the selection and ordering of supplies, equipment, textbooks, technologies and visual aids as appropriate.
  • Assist with annual program advisory committee meetings.
  • Lead and participate in department enrollment, support and engagement initiatives as directed by the Department Head or Chair.
  • Assist the Department Head with initiatives to improve student retention.

Required education and experience:

  • Must hold a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice or a Master’s degree and at least 18 graduate credit hours in Criminal Justice.
  • Possess a strong commitment to the mission of community colleges.
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Have an appreciation of the value of collegiality.

Preferred education and experience:

  • Practical expertise in the area of crime scene investigation, forensic photography, trace evidence, footwear and tire impressions, friction ridge analysis, or other criminal justice forensics-related fields.
  • Willingness to serve as the Criminal Justice Technology Program Coordinator. This is a stipend-based assignment that may accompany this position if assigned, and includes responsibilities related to program coordination, assessment, scheduling, and program development.
