Options Community Services is a non-profit organization dedicated to delivering social services across the Southern Fraser region (Surrey, Delta, White Rock and Langley) from early childhood to seniors. Our comprehensive range of programs and services relies on collaborative relationships with individuals, businesses, community groups and government bodies to create focused, effective and responsive resources for the community.

Position Overview

Are you passionate about community service and looking for hands-on experience in a dynamic environment? Join our team as a Community Service Worker and play a key role in providing assistance and support to the Newcomer Employment Program team at Options, assist with organizing of community events including job fairs and employer engagement events. This position involves working in a diverse and inclusive environment, catering to individuals who speak Spanish, Mandarin, Punjabi, Hindi, Somali, Arabic, Kurdish, Tagalog, and English.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the selected candidate will support newcomers in accessing employment services within the community. They will welcome clients, provide information about the Newcomer Employment Program, and connect individuals with appropriate resources. Key responsibilities include conducting needs assessments through one-on-one or group interactions, referring clients to relevant employment specialists, and assisting with the planning and organization of employment-related events and group sessions. The candidate will follow up with clients via email or phone to confirm their registration and participation in program events. Additionally, they will maintain accurate and confidential client records, and assist the manager and NEP team with planning and executing branding and marketing activities to promote Immigrant Services' mandate, programs, and projects to the broader community and client populations.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has completed or is currently enrolled in a relevant social services or community development program. Previous experience in community service or a related field is preferred. Fluency in a second language is an asset, along with flexibility and a willingness to adapt to changing situations. The candidate should have experience in understanding the needs of immigrants and refugees, as well as strong active listening, empathy, and counseling skills. Sensitivity to and respect for cultural and lifestyle diversity is essential, as is the ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and to work both independently and as part of a team.

This is funded by the Government of Canada through the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Qualified candidates must be:

  • Aged between 15 and 30 years old on the start date of the job;
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN); and
  • Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent Resident of Canada, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.

This role requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Information Check (PIC), and a Vulnerable Sector Check by the Ministry of Justice.
