SUMMER STUDENT JOB OPPORTUNITY

Anishinaabe Aadziwin Helper - Education (Jun-Aug / 12 weeks)

Salary Range: $22.00 per hour

JOB SUMMARY:

Sagamok Anishnawbek Education Anishinaabe Aadziwin is seeking a Summer Student Helper (Shkaabewis / G’Chitwaa Kwe) to support cultural and land-based programming. This role provides general assistance to staff, Elders, and educators while gaining hands-on experience in Anishinaabe Aadziwin, language learning, and community programming.

POSITION DUTIES:

  • Assist with general grounds maintenance, including cleaning, painting, and upkeep of outdoor spaces (e.g., arbour areas).
  • Support land-based activities such as gardening, harvesting traditional medicines, and maintaining outdoor learning areas.
  • Participate in Anishinaabemowin language classes and cultural learning opportunities.
  • Provide program support to Waaseyaankaan Teg.
  • Assist with planning and organizing activities alongside the Land-Based Resource Teacher, Anishinaabemowin Manager, Traditional Knowledge Teacher and Helpers and daycare staff.
  • Help set up and support cultural event, camps, community activities (pow wow) and workshops.
  • Provide assistance with daycare programming, including land-based learning activities for children.
  • Offer general support to staff, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers as needed.
  • Compile and organize inventory of Anishinaabemowin and cultural resources

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Demonstrate respect, reliability, and a willingness to learn.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Flexible to assist with occasional community events or activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Interest in learning about Anishinaabe Aadziwin, culture, and language.
  • Experience working with children or in community programs is an asset.
  • Willingness to participate in outdoor and land-based activities.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work as part of a team and follow direction.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • First Aid/CPR is an asset.
  • Ability to understand and speak Anishinaabemowin is a definite asset.
  • Well developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge in using computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office, and the ability to adapt to new systems

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Combination of indoor and outdoor work.
  • Hands-on tasks and active participation in programming.
