Overhead Crane Electrical Design Engineer (Controls & Systems)
Location: Ashland, VA (Onsite)
Shift: Day Shift (1st Shift)
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire (6 Months)
Pay: Starting at $39+/hour (based on experience)
We are seeking an Electrical Design Engineer with experience in crane systems and industrial controls to support the development and support of overhead lifting equipment. This role is responsible for designing electrical systems, assisting with system startup, and ensuring equipment operates safely and efficiently in accordance with industry standards.
This is a fully onsite position requiring hands-on involvement in both design and field support activities.
What Youll Be Responsible ForElectrical Design & System Development
- Create electrical designs for overhead lifting systems including bridge, gantry, monorail, and workstation cranes
- Develop schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts using CAD software
- Specify components such as VFDs, conductor bars, festoon systems, limit switches, and safety devices
- Perform calculations related to load requirements, power distribution, and motion control (hoist, trolley, bridge, and below-the-hook equipment)
- Ensure all designs align with applicable codes and standards (CMAA, NEC, ASME)
Startup & System Implementation
- Provide support during installation and commissioning of new systems and retrofit projects
- Configure and test drives, soft starters, HMIs, and control components
- Validate system performance through functional testing and adjustments
Troubleshooting & Ongoing Support
- Diagnose issues involving motors, control panels, communication systems, and limit devices
- Assist with breakdown response and implement corrective solutions
- Support maintenance teams with technical expertise as needed
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure systems and designs meet safety regulations and industry standards
- Participate in safety reviews, inspections, and risk assessments
- Maintain accurate documentation for system designs, updates, and modifications
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with cross-functional teams including engineering, project management, and field technicians
- Provide guidance and technical support to operators and maintenance personnel
- Contribute to initiatives that improve system reliability and operational efficiency
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- 3–7 years of experience working with overhead crane systems (design, installation, or maintenance)
- Strong knowledge of:
- Crane classifications and standards (CMAA)
- Motor control systems for hoist, trolley, and bridge motions
- VFDs, soft starters, and motor protection systems
- Ability to read, develop, and interpret electrical schematics and technical documents
- Familiarity with conductor bar systems, festoon systems, pendant controls, radio remote systems, and anti-collision technologies
- Experience with custom crane system design or modernization/retrofit projects
- Knowledge of automation features such as load monitoring or sway control
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical capabilities
- Ability to work in industrial environments and at heights when required
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
