ABOUT THE ROLE
Morrison & Foerster is reimagining how the firm harnesses data to drive performance, profitability, and competitive advantage. Our BI & Analytics team sits at the center of that transformation - building a data-driven culture and equipping firm leadership with the insights they need to make faster, smarter, more confident decisions. We're consolidating our enterprise analytics on Strategy (MicroStrategy) to deliver a next-generation insights experience for our partners, practice leaders, and C-suite. As a Senior BI Analytics Developer, you'll be a strategic partner to the business - translating complex questions into elegant analytics solutions and helping shape how MoFo uses data to run a modern law firm. This is a high-visibility role with real influence over how decisions get made and the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the firm's analytics maturity.
- Design, build, and enhance Strategy dossiers, dashboards, and reports, incorporating prompts, filters, drill paths, and guided navigation to deliver high-impact analytics experiences and actionable insights for decision-makers.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to finance and operational leaders by partnering on strategic priorities and translating complex business challenges into measurable analytics outcomes.
- Implement scheduling, subscriptions, and alerting/thresholds using Strategy Distribution Services to deliver proactive intelligence across the firm.
- Manage the full object lifecycle, including development, testing, documentation, and production migration, while following change management best practices.
- Partner with data architects and engineers to optimize performance through SQL and VLDB tuning, intelligent cube design, caching strategies, and production issue troubleshooting.
- Promote self-service analytics by standardizing templates and visual standards, training users, and providing guidance on KPI definition and dashboard design.
Ensure Data Integrity
- Partner with business owners and data engineers to define data quality rules and reconciliation checks, and build monitoring dashboards and scorecards to track data health and issue resolution.
- Develop and maintain operational monitoring for Strategy jobs, including cube builds, refreshes, and distributions, and create runbooks for incident response and continuous improvement.
- Support data governance initiatives by documenting data definitions and lineage, enforcing access controls, and participating in audits and compliance activities as needed.
Special Projects
- Lead modernization and migration initiatives from legacy reporting tools to Strategy, ensuring functional parity, enhanced usability, and improved performance.
- Serve as the Strategy subject-matter expert for platform upgrades, patches, and environment changes, coordinating testing, documentation, and stakeholder communication.
- Collaborate closely with internal clients, IT, and Financial Systems teams to deliver effective reporting solutions and proactively develop new BI solutions aligned with strategic goals.
- Mentor and review the work of developers and power business users, while contributing reusable components, standards, and automation solutions (e.g., Strategy SDK/REST API and scripting) to improve team productivity.
- 5+ years driving measurable business value through enterprise BI platforms, including 3+ years of hands-on Strategy development dossiers, reports, metadata objects, and Distribution Services.
- Expertise with Strategy Workstation/Developer, including strong knowledge of metadata design, schema objects, metrics, and Strategy Distribution Services.
- Strong experience with relational databases, advanced SQL, performance tuning, troubleshooting complex queries, and relational data modeling.
- Experience with BI SDLC practices, including dev/test/prod promotion, change control, documentation, and implementing security using groups, ACLs, and security filters.
- Exposure to Strategy REST API/SDK, automation, or embedding is preferred.
- Familiarity with Tableau Desktop/Server/Cloud, Power BI, and SAP BusinessObjects/Crystal Reports, especially in a platform migration context.
- Experience with Elite 3E and legal/finance systems is preferred.
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Accounting, Business, or equivalent experience.
- Expert analytical, problem-solving, and data storytelling skills, with strong attention to detail, visual design instincts, and commitment to accuracy.
- Excellent teamwork, client service, and communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and management up to the C-level.
- Ability to prioritize workload and manage multiple priorities effectively.
