POSITION SUMMARY
The Associate Nurse Manager (ANM) supports the Clinical Nurse Manager in leading day-to-day unit operations with a strong focus on patient throughput, staffing coordination, and frontline leadership. This role serves as a bridge between bedside nursing staff and unit leadership, ensuring safe, timely, and efficient patient care delivery. The ANM plays a key role in managing patient flow, optimizing bed utilization, reducing discharge delays, and ensuring the unit meets operational and quality targets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate patient flow on a shift-to-shift basis, ensuring timely admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Monitor discharge planning activities to reduce order-to-discharge and discharge-to-door times.
- Partner with Care Management, Transport, Environmental Services, and ancillary departments to remove throughput barriers.
- Oversee and support nursing staff in daily operations, ensuring adherence to standards of care and regulatory requirements.
- Manage on-shift staffing allocations, floating decisions, and surge capacity response.
- Escalate issues to appropriate leadership promptly and provide input on process improvement opportunities.
- Participate in unit-based throughput initiatives and performance improvement projects.
- Support onboarding, orientation, and ongoing competency development of staff.
- Act as a resource nurse as needed during high-acuity or surge situations.
- Foster and sustain a healthy work environment by modeling authentic leadership, promoting skilled communication, ensuring appropriate staffing, encouraging meaningful recognition, and engaging staff in shared decision-making to support morale, retention, and safe patient care.
QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION:
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required. * Must be currently enrolled in a BSN program and graduate within 2 years of hire/transfer. * Master's degree preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: * Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey or current multi-state license required. * American Heart Association BLS required. * Approved professional nursing certification required within 1 year of hire or transfer. Current incumbents must obtain within 1 year, by 2/1/2027.
SPECIALITY / UNIT EXPERIENCE ADVANCE CERTIFICATION / REQUIREMENTS Emergency Room * Mainland * Satellite ED - Kessler 2-4 years medical/surgical experience required; 2 years emergency room experience preferred. ATCN, and PALS or ENPC required. ACLS required Emergency Room City 2-4 years medical/surgical experience required; 2 years emergency room experience preferred. ATCN, and PALS or ENPC required. ACLS required Labor and Delivery Obstetrics 2-4 years labor and delivery / OB experience required. NRP and ACLS required. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit/Intermediate Care Unit 2-4 years neonatal Intensive Care Unit experience required. NRP required Mother/Baby Unit 2-4 years mother/baby experience preferred. NRP and ACLS required Operating Room Minimum 1 year medical/surgical experience desired; 1-2 years operating room experience desired. ACLS required Trauma 2-4 years medical/surgical experience required; 1-2 years trauma experience preferred. ATCN required ACLS preferred. Oncology 1 -2 years medical/surgical experience preferred. Chemotherapy experience preferred. Endoscopy Minimum 2 years medical/surgical experience required; 1 year telemetry experience preferred;1 year of Endo or O.R. experience preferred. ACLS is required, PALS and CCRN are preferred. CGRN preferred. Cardiac Diagnostic 1 -2 years medical/surgical experience required; 1-2 years critical care experience preferred. ACLS is required Intensive Care Units * Cardiovascular ICU * Intensive Care Unit MLD * 3 Harmony - TICU/MICU 2-4 years critical care experience required. 2-4 years of experience within specialty is preferred. ACLS and CCRN preferred Intermediate Care * 2 Meadow * HVU * 4 Harmony * 6 Harmony 2-5 years telemetry experience required. ACLS preferred. Radiation Oncology 1-3 years oncology experience required. OCN preferred Surgical Services * PACU * SDS * Recovery Room 1-3 years critical care experience preferred. ACLS required, PALS preferred EXPERIENCE: 1-2 years of leadership, charge nurse, or clinical operations experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated expertise in patient flow, team leadership, and real-time problem-solving. Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as leadership skills required. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire. UNIT POPULATIONS SERVED Associate Clinical Managers have knowledge of core competencies on the following patient population(s) serviced: Bariatric Morbid obese adult with all comorbid illness/conditions, including but not limited to: cardiac/cardiovascular, metabolic; renal, pulmonary, etc.. Cath Lab Cardiac/vascular conditions and diseases including but not limited to: CAD, carotid stenosis, renal stenosis, PVD, etc. Critical Care Acute medical/surgical care of skeletal muscular, renal ortho conditions and diseases including but not limited to: AMI, CAD, PVD, CVA/TIA, COPD, CHF, shock, renal failure, metabolic disorders, etc.. Behavioral Health Behavioral health illnesses including but not limited to bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, psychosis, etc.. Dialysis Patients with acute or chronic renal failure or chronic renal disease. Endoscopy Chronic pain management, endoscopic procedures of cardiovascular, GI, pulmonary conditions and disease, etc.. Emergency Department Triage, assess and treat patients of all age presenting for emergency care for all body systems, conditions and diseases including but not limited to: coronary, pulmonary, neuro, skeletal muscular, GI/metabolic, GU/renal, GYN, integumentary, etc.. Intermediate Care Monitored post-surgical care including but not limited to neuro, GI, GU/GYN, peripheral vascular interventions, orthopedic procedures, etc.. Medical diagnoses including but not limited to: cardiac, pulmonary, neuron, GI, VCA/TIA and renal conditions, etc.. Medical Surgical Medical/Surgical diagnoses including but not limited to orthopedic, neuron, GI, GU/GYN, renal, metabolic, pulmonary systems and those requiring isolation/precautions. Telemetry/Medical/Surgical Cardiac/cardiovascular, neuro, GI conditions and diseases including not limited to: CAD, PVD, COPD, CHF, metabolic disorders, etc.. Telemetry/Stroke Cardiac/cardiovascular, neuron, renal, GI conditions and diseases including but not limited to: CAD, PVD, CVA/TIA, COPD, CHF, metabolic disorders, etc.. Wound Care GI, GYN/GU, integumentary conditions and diseases including but not limited to all ostomy diversion surgeries, wound care, pressure sore/ulcer etc.. WORK ENVIRONMENT Acute-care inpatient setting with high volume and dynamic patient flow. Requires flexibility to cover a variety of shifts, including weekends and nights, to support 24/7 operations. Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, hazardous substances, blood-borne pathogens, and potential injury Physical demands include but are not limited to consideration stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing heavy equipment and excessive standing and walking. Lifting approximately 25-50 lbs. frequently; lifting 50-10 lbs. with assistance occasionally. Some departments require the ability to distinguish colors. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP This position reports to department leadership and supervises incumbents as assigned.
