Join SC Byars Treatment Center in Columbia, South Carolina, a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) providing 24-hour residential care and treatment for youth and adolescents. We’re seeking a Director of Nursing to lead the nursing department and help ensure individuals served receive safe, high-quality, compassionate care in a structured and therapeutic environment.

In this role, you’ll plan, organize, and direct the functions of the nursing department while leading and developing nursing staff, coordinating care with clinical and operational teams, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory and healthcare standards. As a key member of the site leadership team, you’ll help strengthen nursing practice, align resources with the needs of the population served, and support a culture focused on safety, quality, collaboration, and recovery.

What You’ll Do

• Lead, manage, and direct nursing department operations to ensure effective and high-quality care delivery
• Solve complex clinical, technical, administrative, and staffing challenges
• Oversee active treatment programming across all living areas, ensuring engagement of individuals served
• Interview, hire, and onboard nursing staff, ensuring clinical competence and professional growth
• Conduct performance reviews, manage employee relations issues, and take corrective action when needed
• Create, approve, and monitor schedules, leave requests, and overtime usage
• Develop, maintain, and communicate policies and procedures aligned with regulatory and accreditation standards (TJC, state, federal, and local)
• Manage staffing levels, department structure, and operating expenses, including implementation of new or revised programs
• Provide direct nursing care as needed in response to staffing or operational demands
• Communicate effectively with senior leadership and present on departmental performance and initiatives

What We’re Looking For

Education

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (required)
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or related field (preferred unless required by contract)
• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or related field (preferred unless required by contract)

Experience

• For roles outside of California, five (5) years of total nursing experience with three (3) years of managerial work experience or seven (7) years progressive leadership experience in high-acuity, secure environments, including prior supervisory and command-level roles within behavioral health or secure settings, combined with current clinical expertise as a Registered Nurse (required)
• For California-based roles: At least one (1) year of nursing supervision experience within the last five (5) years (required)
• Experience in a forensic or mental health setting (preferred)

Licenses/Certifications

• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment or a valid multi-state compact license (required)
