Clinical Research Nurse Practitioner

Med-Neurology - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (26005545)

The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Neurology, University of Pittsburgh Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) is hiring a nurse practitioner to provide research support to the NIA-funded ADRC through the research services in the ADRC Clinical Core. This person will obtain medical/ neurological histories and perform physical/neurologic examinations on ADRC registry participants; conduct research interviews with the study partner, provide back up for the ADRC Autopsy program; and will assist in patient recruitment and the conduct of ADRC-related clinical trials and longitudinal consortia. She/he will also participate with ADRC Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement Core in the education of health professionals; provide relevant tutorials; and conduct lectures regarding AD healthy aging to the lay community.

Education: Master’s Degree Nurse Practitioner is preferred or comparable education.

Experience: Preferred 2-3 relevant experience


Job Summary

Supports clinical research projects by facilitating finalization on medical research protocols, managing final approvals of procedures, and assisting research faculty with future trials by study protocol drug and device advisement. Prepares, writes, and presents updated protocols. Works directly with patients and takes medical histories, performs exams, obtains biological specimens, assists with procedures, schedules tests, and performs study-specific protocols. Acts as liaison to regulatory bodies and reports to auditing bodies. Ensures regulatory adherence.


Essential Functions

Obtain comprehensive medical, medication, and neurological histories and perform thorough physical/neurologic examinations on ADRC participants and healthy controls Establish rapport with both pts/caregiver; Recognize signs and symptoms of dementing illnesses and other medical conditions; Formulate differential diagnoses in conjunction with attending physicians; Promptly report unusual, findings and make appropriate recommendations; Complete research/clinical forms following established guidelines; Obtain/analyze routine laboratory specimens, .Provide written comprehensive summary to be included in the patient’s research file; prepare and present completed history and data at weekly ADRC Consensus Conference; and provide backup for the ADRC Autopsy program.

Conduct assessments for clinical drug trials and NIH consortia and serve as backup coordinator or lead coordination as necessary. Assist with the creation of a subject recruitment plan to maintain a steady flow of subjects into trials. Develop source documents and participate in QC activities related to electronic data submissions. Monitor SAEs, providing sponsor and IRB with information according to guidelines, and maintain documentation until SAE is resolved. Meet with study monitors and handle data queries and quality assurance activities.

Participate with ADRC Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement (ORE) Core in the education of mini-residents, interns, residents and fellows, health professionals, other students and caregivers. Provide relevant tutorials. Provide opportunity for observation/ explanation of clinical interview and exam. Provide tutorials relative to normal aging and differential diagnoses of AD and other dementias. Conduct lectures regarding AD research update, communication with AD patients and differential diagnosis to lay community audiences.
