Position Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides and oversees direct nursing care for clients in behavioral health and substance use treatment settings. The RN is responsible for conducting comprehensive assessments, developing and implementing nursing care plans, administering medications, supervising LPNs and medical support staff, and ensuring compliance with clinical and regulatory standards. This position requires the consistent application of advanced nursing knowledge, independent judgment, and critical thinking skills. Detox nurses provide specialized medical and emotional care to patients withdrawing from drugs or alcohol by monitoring vital signs, managing symptoms with medications and other treatments, and offering emotional support and patient education. They are responsible for initial patient assessments, developing and implementing care plans, administering medications, and collaborating with doctors, counselors, and other team members to ensure safety and a smooth transition into long-term recovery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive client nursing assessments, including intake evaluations, ongoing health monitoring, and withdrawal assessments (CIWA, COWS).
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans in collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary teams.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and nursing standards of practice.
- Supervise LPNs, and support staff to ensure proper delivery of care and adherence to protocols.
- Maintain accurate and timely nursing documentation in compliance with federal, state, and organizational standards.
- Respond to medical and psychiatric emergencies, provide stabilization, and coordinate emergency transport when necessary.
- Provide client education on medications, wellness, recovery, and disease prevention.
- Ensure infection control practices, proper medication storage, and adherence to OSHA and Joint Commission standards.
- Collaborate with physicians, therapists, case managers, and support staff to coordinate client care.
- Participate in staff training, supervision, and clinical meetings.
Preferred Experience, Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
- Experience in behavioral health or substance use treatment strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of behavioral health facility regulations, licensing, and payer requirements.
Relevant Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Ability to sit, walking, and stand for extended periods
- Occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds (e.g., program materials, group room setup)
- Ability to engage with clients in high-stress or emotionally intense situations
- Regular use of computer systems for documentation and reporting
- Work is performed primarily in residential and outpatient behavioral health settings.
- Shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Collaborative team environment within a healthcare or behavioral health treatment setting

Requirements:Required Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies
- Current, active state license as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate’s degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted with relevant experience.
- Current BLS/CPR certification required; ACLS preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience; prior experience in behavioral health, detox, or substance use treatment strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of CIWA, COWS, and other withdrawal management and assessment tools.
- Strong critical thinking, organizational, and clinical decision-making skills.
- Ability to supervise and mentor LPNs and other nursing staff.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
