About the role

GEL Laboratories, LLC, an affiliate of The GEL Group, Inc., is seeking a Radiation Safety Technician to join our team of professionals in our Charleston, SC office to receive samples from clients and inspect for proper container, temperature, preservatives, etc. This position is responsible for the safe operation of the RAD Safety Aliquot Laboratory and will distribute aliquots of RAD Safety-controlled samples to support the laboratory’s ALARA program. This entry-level role necessitates strong attention to detail, proven ability to work both quickly and efficiently in a laboratory setting, and the ability to work independently or within a team structure. What you'll do

The Radiation Safety Technician is responsible for a wide array of functions connected to safely handling and managing radioactive samples as they move throughout the Laboratory. This includes:

  • Safe operation, storage, and maintenance of RAD Safety-controlled material and samples.
  • Responsible for full operations of the RAD Safety Aliquot Lab, including the use of glove boxes for sample aliquot operations.
  • Perform routine and situational radiation and contamination surveys.
  • Perform radiological decontamination on equipment and facilities as directed by the RAD Safety Officer (RSO).
  • Operates and checks the daily functionality of the RAD Safety Group’s portable instrument inventory.
  • May perform other radiation safety functions as directed by the RSO.
  • Demonstrating and supporting GEL core values.
  • Conducting tasks that support other operations in the laboratory.

Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma with six months of laboratory or related experience is required.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree (with science or laboratory course completion), prior experience as a RAD Safety Technician, or Engineering Laboratory Technician preferred.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to receive samples from clients properly.
  • Exhibits organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Willing to work a Monday – Friday schedule or a Tuesday – Saturday schedule.

Working Environment & Physical Demands

This position requires working in a busy production laboratory, safely handling and storing RAD Safety-controlled material and samples. Safety is a priority, and negligence is not tolerated. Safety equipment is provided, and use is mandatory.

The physical demands outlined in this job posting are representative of those that are required for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:

  • Precise hand/eye coordination and finger/hand manipulation.
  • Potential exposure to chemicals and to hazardous and/or radioactive materials.
  • Use of office and laboratory equipment and stamina to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
