Inspector I-II - Construction Management at Frederick County Government – Frederick, Maryland

Non-exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible); full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; full benefits

This technical position is responsible for inspecting construction related projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and contract documents. The inspector will perform inspection of commercial buildings, storm water management facilities, site development, parkland development, roads and bridges, and other County owned assets. Supervision is received from the Program Manager.

NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy. For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate, with limited exception.

• Oversee construction of bridges and roadway capital improvement projects
• Ensure contractors perform construction work in accordance with contract documents
• Coordinate with contractors, architects and engineers in making field corrections and changes from plans and specifications
• Check supplies, materials and equipment against the specifications and for defects or damages
• Check plans and specifications for construction elevation and line
• Prepare and submit project reports and records of work performed
• Document and administer all project records (e.g. logs, RFI's, RFP's, requisitions, etc.) on projects assigned
• Perform other related duties as required

INSPECTOR I REQUIREMENTS $24.80 - $42.17:

• High school graduation, or the equivalent
• Possession of a valid automobile operator’s license
• Minimum 2 year of construction and inspection work experience in one or more of the following fields: utility installation (water, sewer, storm drain), building construction, storm water management construction, roadway and bridges, and/or parkland development construction
• NOTE: A combination of related education and/or work experience may be considered towards the overall requirements of this position

INSPECTOR II REQUIREMENTS $26.54 - $45.12:

• High school graduation, or the equivalent
• Possession of a valid automobile operator's license
• Minimum 3 years of construction and inspection work experience in one or more of the following fields: utility installation (water, sewer, storm drain), building construction, storm water management construction, roadway and bridges, and/or parkland development construction
• NOTE: A combination of related education and/or work experience may be considered towards the overall requirements of this position

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

• Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
• Knowledge of construction materials, equipment, tools and methods related to the above projects
• Knowledge of local, State and Federal construction standards, specifications, building codes and other construction requirements
• Knowledge of construction schedules and stages of construction
• Working knowledge of civil engineering practices, surveying practices and principles, and mathematics
• Working knowledge of potential hazards associated with this type of work, with ability to effectively initiate and enforce appropriate safety precautions
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans and specifications
• Ability to access and utilize computerized systems and equipment
• Ability to demonstrate sound technical judgment in the performance of assigned duties
• Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to write and maintain clear, concise reports and records
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors and the general public
• Knowledge of pavement management and placement of hot mix asphalt

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:

• Work experience performing construction-related inspections
• College coursework related to the construction trade
• Experience with ProCore construction management software

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:

• While working in this position, the employee is required to frequently walk, stoop and drive; occasionally climb and reach; and rarely crawl.
• While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly wear protective equipment; frequently work outdoors, walk on uneven ground, work in hot temperatures above 100 degrees and cold temperatures below 32 degrees, work in dirty, dusty and noisy environments and hear machinery; occasionally work indoors; and rarely work in confined spaces, work at heights and below ground level

• Available to work irregular hours as needed due to contractors' schedules, and available on-call for emergency situations
