Job Description

Position Summary

The Birthing Center Technician at Watauga Medical Center plays a critical role in supporting the healthcare team to ensure the safe and effective delivery of care to mothers and newborns. This role involves assisting in the preparation and maintenance of birthing rooms, providing direct and indirect patient care, and supporting the nursing staff and physicians with various tasks to ensure a smooth and positive birthing experience. Key Responsibilities

Patient Care Support:

  • Assist in the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
  • Provide comfort and reassurance to patients and their families.
  • Assist with positioning, bathing, and other personal care needs of patients.

Clinical Assistance:

  • Prepare and maintain birthing rooms, ensuring cleanliness and readiness for deliveries.
  • Assist in setting up and cleaning delivery and post-delivery rooms.
  • Support nurses and physicians during labor and delivery procedures.
  • Handle and operate medical equipment as directed.

Operational Duties:

  • Maintain inventory and stock supplies in birthing rooms and supply closets.
  • Ensure the availability of sterile instruments and equipment.
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory as required.

Documentation and Communication:

  • Accurately document patient care activities in medical records.
  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team regarding patient status and any changes observed.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, including infection control and safety protocols.
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs to stay current with best practices and technologies in maternal and newborn care.

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with education and experience. Hiring compensation ranges from $16.50 - $23.92 / hour. This position is also eligible for shift differential on top of base rate of pay.

Position Qualifications Minimum Education
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Completion of a course leading to listing with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Health Care Personnel Registry (NC HCPR) as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) I.
Experience
  • Previous experience as a CNA is preferred.
Required Registration/License/Certification
  • Current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) I in the state of North Carolina.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is required at the time of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and works within the scope of the CNA.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public, patients, family, staff, and physicians and acts within the chain of command, utilizing positive verbal and non-verbal skills.
  • Competent in delivering safe and effective patient care within limits of certification and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the continuum of care provided.
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, family, staff, and physicians.
  • Computer skills including data entry and the EMR.
Physical Demands
  • Lifts, positions, pushes, pulls, and/or transfers up to and greater than 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and mobility.
  • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable sitting/standing/walking.
  • Bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
  • Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
Working Conditions
  • Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases.
  • Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment, odorous chemicals, and specimens and unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces), etc.
  • Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) and emergencies.
  • Continuous standing and walking long periods = to or greater than > 8 hours per shift.
  • Speaking, reading, and writing, expanded > 8 hours per day.
