Job Description:

The City of Brockton seeks an attorney to serve as Assistant City Solicitor. This position is appointed by the Mayor and reports to the City Solicitor. The Assistant City Solicitor assists in representing the City in all legal proceedings and serving as corporate counsel to the Mayor, department heads, and other City officials.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the City Solicitor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None

Position is governed by the City of Brockton Ordinances.

SALARY: $106,917 - $116,831 annually - Commensurate with experience
Step Salary System to be awarded annually on the anniversary date of hire and would typically start at Step I. Please note, the salary range indicated is firm.

The position is not subject to the City of Brockton residency requirement.

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conducting legal research, advocating on behalf of the City in state and federal courts. Representing the City before state boards, commissions and other state agencies, commencing and prosecuting legal actions on behalf of the City.
  • Preparing and responding to litigation pleadings and discovery, participating in labor negotiations and resolving union grievances, rendering legal opinions, advising municipal officers, departments, commissions and boards, preparing responses to public records requests, and drafting and reviewing municipal contracts.
  • The Assistant City Solicitor may be expected to attend occasional evening meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE:

Applicants must have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and be admitted to the Massachusetts Bar. Federal Bar admission preferred. Must have 3-5 years of experience as a practicing attorney. Experience in municipal law, land use, labor and employment law, or general litigation is a plus.
