About This Position

Performs difficult technical and responsible administrative work in the maintenance, repair, and operation of heavy equipment, does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision.

Maintaining and repairing heavy equipment; ensuring proper equipment operation; maintaining records; coordinating repairs.
(The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment including dozers, electric line trucks, backhoes, front end loaders, street sweepers and other heavy equipment.
  • Repairs, inspects, and adjusts hydraulic pumps and motors, electrical systems, diesel motors, steering systems, drive motors, boom and bucket mechanisms and other parts essential to the proper operation of equipment.
  • Fabricates and welds replacement parts, tools, etc.
  • Obtains price quotes for and orders parts and supplies.
  • Maintains service records; coordinates repair service performed under contract; monitors work performed by outside contractor.
  • Assists with snow removal and ice control.
  • May be required to work outside normal working hours in an emergency or stand-by status.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Thorough knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines; thorough knowledge of the safe operation and repair of heavy equipment and the principles of operation and repair of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems for heavy equipment; ability to recognize unsafe and/or improper equipment operation; ability to be firm yet tactful when directing operators to cease unsafe and/or improper equipment operation; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by specialized courses and/or certifications in hydraulics, gasoline and diesel engine repair and related mechanical and electrical systems and extensive experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Special Requirements
Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
