Registered Nurse

Job Summary

Functions as nephrology nurse in the provision of acute hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis care and treatment. Communicate with the physician and other members of the healthcare team to provide timely and effective dialysis care needs. Prepares dialysis equipment, able to perform safety checks on all equipment prior to each hemodialysis treatment. Initiates hemodialysis treatment, hemofiltration, and peritoneal dialysis treatment according to policies and procedures. Provides safe, effective delivery of patient care in compliance with standards outlined by the facility, as well as regulations set by state and federal agencies.

Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions

  • Performs nephrology-nursing care to patients with renal failure; administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Prepares dialysis equipment, able to perform safety checks on all equipment prior to each hemodialysis treatment.
  • Indicates hemodialysis treatment, hemofiltration, and peritoneal dialysis treatment according to policies and procedures.
  • Observes, records, and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatment to Nephrologist on an ongoing basis.
  • Adheres to infection control and universal precautions.
  • Conducts admissions nursing assessment.
  • Participates in team review of patient's progress.
  • Recommends changes in treatment based on patient's current needs, facilitates communication between patient, family and team members; preforms assessment on a patients’ pre and pos treatment and reports unusual findings to Nephrologist.
  • Checks blood with another licensed personnel and administer blood per unit policy.
  • Adds additive to increase concentration of specific electrolytes in acid concentration.
  • Participates in quality management program.
  • Understands that attendance affects team morale and confidence. Demonstrates reliability and punctuality in regard to attendance. Consistently is present and ready to begin work activities at start of shift, stays within established break periods, arrives on time for meetings and leaves work area promptly at the conclusion of the shift to reduce potential distractions. Schedules personal appointments or requests adjustment to schedule with least amount of disruption to service delivery. Provides prompt notice for unexpected absences.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required
    • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
    • Associate's degree in Nursing

Experience:

  • Required
    • One year of experience in Healthcare as a Registered Nurse
    • Six months of experience in Hemodialysis

Certification/Licensure:

  • Required
    • Registered Nurse (RN), with authorization to practice in the State of Texas
    • CPR Certification
  • Preferred
    • Certification in Nephrology
    • Certification in Hemodialysis
