This is a collaborative, fast-paced leadership role with a meaningful opportunity to influence how innovative therapies and disease areas are understood.

Accountabilities:

The Director will develop and execute integrated communications strategies that connect product, pipeline, disease, and corporate priorities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement communications strategies for marketed products and pipeline assets, including programs in rare kidney disease and classical homocystinuria.
  • Create communications plans supporting commercial priorities and major product milestones, including clinical updates, data presentations, publications, regulatory events, medical congresses, and lifecycle initiatives.
  • Lead the development of communications materials such as press releases, FAQs, product messaging guides, thought leadership content, and digital assets.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Commercial, Patient Advocacy, Investor Relations, and Corporate Communications to ensure consistent and accurate messaging.
  • Support disease education, thought leadership, market-shaping initiatives, and broader product and pipeline storytelling.
  • Support media relations as well as digital and social communications related to products, pipeline programs, and therapeutic areas.
  • Prepare executives and subject-matter experts for external engagements and communications opportunities.
  • Manage external public relations agencies, vendors, project timelines, budgets, and critical paths.
  • Measure communications effectiveness and use insights to strengthen future strategies and initiatives.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate combines strong communications leadership with the ability to understand and translate complex scientific and healthcare information for diverse audiences. Key qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • 10+ years of experience in corporate communications, product communications, public relations, or a related discipline within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or healthcare environments.
  • Proven experience supporting marketed products and pipeline programs, including commercial activities, clinical data milestones, regulatory communications, or disease education.
  • Strong scientific and product storytelling capabilities, with the ability to turn complex information into clear, credible, and audience-appropriate communications.
  • Working knowledge of drug development and commercialization processes and the communications requirements associated with clinical, data, regulatory, and commercial milestones.
  • Experience in rare disease, nephrology, metabolic disorders, or another science-driven therapeutic area is preferred.
  • Excellent writing, collaboration, interpersonal, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and changing responsibilities in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
  • Experience managing public relations agencies, vendors, budgets, timelines, and complex communications projects.
  • Ability to create and manage detailed project plans, critical paths, timelines, and budgets.
  • Ability to travel 15–20% domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Ability to perform face-to-face work with colleagues and/or work onsite in San Diego; the role is not expected to be fully remote.

Benefits:

  • Target base pay range of $189,000–$246,000.
  • Short-term incentive compensation in addition to base salary.
  • Long-term incentive compensation through company stock.
  • Premium health, financial, work-life, and well-being benefits for eligible employees and dependents.
  • Wellness and employee support programs.
  • Life insurance and disability coverage.
  • Retirement plans with an employer match.
  • Generous paid time off.
  • Hybrid work environment with opportunities for onsite collaboration in San Diego.
  • Opportunities to contribute to meaningful communications supporting rare disease patients and the development of innovative therapies.
