Accountabilities:

The Principal Software Engineer will provide technical leadership across engineering and product initiatives, helping shape architecture, improve delivery practices, and ensure technology decisions align with business goals. This role requires strong engineering judgment, hands-on technical expertise, and the ability to influence teams through collaboration and mentorship.

  • Partner with engineering leadership, product teams, and business stakeholders to define technical strategy, priorities, and long-term roadmaps.
  • Develop a deep understanding of business operations, customer needs, and existing systems to guide effective technical decisions.
  • Lead technical discovery and planning for complex initiatives involving multiple teams, products, integrations, and external partners.
  • Translate ambiguous requirements into clear technical solutions, dependencies, risks, milestones, and ownership plans.
  • Guide architecture decisions across applications, integrations, data platforms, and cloud infrastructure while balancing reliability, security, scalability, maintainability, and delivery speed.
  • Contribute directly to production code through development, debugging, reviews, prototypes, and technical problem-solving when needed.
  • Evaluate unfamiliar systems and technologies quickly while identifying practical solutions to reduce technical risk.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing.
  • Establish engineering standards, reusable patterns, and practical frameworks that help teams operate effectively.
  • Improve software quality through better testing practices, observability, incident response processes, CI/CD improvements, documentation, and security practices.
  • Drive modernization initiatives, technical debt reduction, and improvements that strengthen reliability and customer experience.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, contractors, consultants, and vendors to deliver high-impact technical outcomes.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, curiosity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced software engineer with strong architecture skills, proven technical leadership experience, and the ability to create impact across multiple teams and systems.

  • 7+ years of software development experience, including 5+ years in senior technical leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated success leading major technical initiatives across multiple teams, products, platforms, or customer engagements.
  • Strong software engineering foundation with experience writing code, debugging complex issues, and making architecture and system design decisions.
  • Ability to quickly learn new business domains, programming languages, frameworks, and technical environments.
  • Experience translating business objectives and incomplete requirements into clear technical strategies for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to influence without formal authority and collaborate effectively with engineering, product, and business leaders.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and helping teams improve technical capabilities.
  • Proven track record of ownership, accountability, risk management, and delivering high-quality solutions.
  • Experience with modern technology environments such as Azure, C#, .NET, React, and TypeScript is preferred.
  • Experience working with benefits administration, healthcare technology, insurance, payroll, HR technology, or other operationally complex industries is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong customer-focused mindset with the ability to deliver reliable solutions and exceptional service.
  • Ability to work remotely with a stable high-speed internet connection and required remote workspace setup.
Benefits:
  • Remote-first work environment with flexible scheduling options.
  • Monday through Friday schedule with opportunities for approved alternative schedules.
  • Competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans for employees and families.
  • Company-funded Health Savings Accounts (HSA).
  • 401(k) retirement plans with company matching contributions up to 5%.
  • Life insurance, accident insurance, pet insurance, and additional employee benefits.
  • Generous vacation policy supporting work-life balance.
  • Life Balance Reimbursement Plan to support personal and family priorities.
  • Volunteer program supporting community involvement initiatives.
  • Opportunity to influence technology strategy and modernization efforts across a growing organization.
