This leadership role offers the opportunity to oversee underwriting performance, profitability, and professional development within a dynamic insurance environment. You’ll guide an underwriting team while ensuring sound risk selection, pricing, service quality, and operational effectiveness. The position combines people leadership with technical underwriting expertise and requires strong independent judgment on complex business and personnel matters. You’ll collaborate with agents, vendors, Sales, Product Management, and other internal partners to support business growth and customer service excellence. You’ll also contribute to product development, system enhancements, automation improvements, and regulatory compliance. The role is well suited to an experienced insurance professional who enjoys developing talent while driving disciplined, profitable underwriting practices.
- Lead the overall underwriting effectiveness and profitability of the branch, ensuring decisions align with business strategy, risk objectives, and service expectations.
- Ensure underwriting activities comply with applicable laws, regulations, internal policies, procedures, and established underwriting standards.
- Manage, coach, and develop underwriting team members through continuous feedback, performance monitoring, training, and career development opportunities.
- Identify high-potential employees and support their progression into expanded responsibilities, while addressing performance or disciplinary matters when necessary.
- Ensure consistently high-quality underwriting work that meets established guidelines, service goals, regulatory requirements, and operational standards.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with agents, vendors, Sales, Product Management, and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Monitor industry trends, competitor activity, market developments, and emerging underwriting practices to inform business decisions.
- Maintain and update underwriting procedures and ensure continued alignment with regulatory requirements and applicable practices across states.
- Review and optimize automation rules to improve efficiency, streamline processes, and maintain consistency across relevant markets.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of new property products, system enhancements, and policy forms, including overseeing user testing and post-launch analysis.
- Lead or contribute to strategic projects focused on process improvement, operational efficiency, business growth, and profitability.
- Bachelor’s degree required; a CPCU designation or coursework toward a CPCU is preferred.
- At least 8 years of relevant insurance or underwriting experience, including a minimum of 5 years in a managerial or people-leadership capacity.
- Deep knowledge of underwriting operations, policies, procedures, risk selection, pricing, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment when addressing complex underwriting, personnel, customer, and operational matters with potentially significant business or legal implications.
- Strong technical underwriting expertise, with the ability to provide guidance, training, and education to team members.
- Proven ability to motivate, manage, monitor, and develop employees while building a knowledgeable and high-performing underwriting organization.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to identify opportunities for process improvement and operational efficiency.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and effectively with stakeholders at all organizational levels.
- Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills, particularly when working across underwriting, sales, product, vendor, and other business functions.
- Ability to adapt to evolving market conditions, regulatory requirements, technologies, and competitive developments.

- Competitive annual base salary, with geographic ranges from $82,773 to $204,439 USD, depending on location, experience, skills, and qualifications.
- California hiring range of approximately $137,522–$168,083 USD.
