JOB SUMMARY

The Athletic Trainer is responsible for providing athletic training services within Pinehurst Surgical Clinic’s Physical Therapy Department and assigned local high school athletic programs. This position supports the prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and management of athletic injuries and musculoskeletal conditions under the direction of licensed physicians and in collaboration with physical therapists and other healthcare professionals. Responsibilities include on-site athletic event coverage, injury assessment, emergency response, rehabilitation support, return-to-play coordination, and community outreach activities. The Athletic Trainer serves as a liaison between athletes, families, coaches, schools, physicians, and rehabilitation staff to promote safe athletic participation and high-quality patient care while maintaining compliance with all applicable professional, regulatory, and organizational standards.

Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Evaluate athletic injuries and provide immediate care, first aid, and emergency response as needed.
  • Develop and implement injury prevention, rehabilitation, conditioning, and return-to-play programs under physician direction and within scope of practice.
  • Assist with orthopedic and sports medicine patient care coordination between PSC providers, physical therapists, and athletes.
  • Apply therapeutic modalities, taping, bracing, and other athletic training techniques.
  • Monitor athlete recovery progress and communicate status updates to physicians, therapists, coaches, parents, and school personnel as appropriate.
  • Educate athletes, families, and coaches on injury prevention, conditioning, hydration, nutrition, and safe participation practices.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) and other required systems.

High School & Community Outreach Responsibilities

  • Provide athletic training coverage for assigned high school athletic events, practices, and related activities.
  • Coordinate care and communication with athletic directors, coaches, school administration, and parents.
  • Assist with implementation and review of emergency action plans for athletic programs.
  • Promote PSC Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Physical Therapy services within the community.
  • Participate in community outreach events, sports physicals, injury screenings, and educational programs.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Maintain athletic training supplies, equipment, and treatment areas.
  • Ensure compliance with clinic policies, OSHA standards, HIPAA regulations, and applicable state and federal requirements.
  • Assist with scheduling and coordination of athlete referrals and follow-up appointments.
  • Support departmental quality initiatives and patient satisfaction goals.
  • Participate in staff meetings, continuing education, and departmental training activities.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of injury evaluation, rehabilitation techniques, and emergency athletic care.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with athletes, coaches, parents, physicians, and staff.
  • Strong understanding of return-to-play protocols and sports performance principles.
  • Ability to work independently in school and event settings while maintaining collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Proficient computer and documentation skills.
  • Commitment to professionalism, compassion, teamwork, and excellent patient care.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training from an accredited program required.
  • Current Board of Certification (BOC) certification required.
  • Current North Carolina Athletic Trainer License or ability to obtain upon hire required.
  • CPR/BLS certification required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of athletic training experience preferred, preferably in orthopedic, sports medicine, physical therapy, or high school athletics.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and occasional weekends, based on athletic event schedules.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, and assisting injured athletes.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations on athletic fields or courts.
  • Ability to travel between clinical locations and local schools/events as needed.
