Roads Maintenance Technician

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Roads Supervisor the Roads Maintenance Technician performs skilled and semi-skilled work to maintain, repair, and improve City streets, shoulders, drainage systems, rights-of-way, and related infrastructure. The position operates vehicles and equipment, performs pavement preservation and construction-support activities, establishes traffic control, and assists with snow removal and emergency response.

Work requires dependable attendance, safe equipment operation, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively as part of a road maintenance crew in changing weather and field conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

Roadway Maintenance and Repair

• Performs routine maintenance and repair of City streets, shoulders, rights-of-way, and related infrastructure.
• Repairs potholes and pavement failures; performs asphalt patching, surface preparation, and shoulder maintenance.
• Performs crack sealing and applies Gap Mastic to joints, seams, and damaged pavement areas.
• Assists with seal coating and chip seal operations, including preparation, sweeping, rolling, compaction, and cleanup.
• Assists with grading, base preparation, road extensions, and other small roadway construction projects.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance

• Operates assigned vehicles and equipment, which may include dump trucks, loaders, excavators, skid steers, rollers, sweepers, motor graders, snowplows, and hand or power tools.
• Uses GPS machine-control or grade-control equipment when trained and assigned.
• Conducts pre-trip and daily equipment inspections and promptly reports defects, damage, or maintenance needs.
• Performs routine cleaning, lubrication, and minor maintenance consistent with training and City procedures.
• Loads, transports, stages, and secures tools, equipment, and materials for field projects.

Drainage, Traffic Control, and Worksite Safety

• Cleans, repairs, and maintains roadside drainage facilities, culverts, ditches, and stormwater conveyance areas.
• Sets up, maintains, and removes traffic-control devices in accordance with approved plans and safety standards.
• Identifies worksite hazards, follows required safety procedures, and uses assigned personal protective equipment.
• Maintains an orderly worksite and protects completed work, City property, equipment, coworkers, and the public from avoidable damage or injury.

Seasonal and General Public Works Support

• Supports snow and ice control operations, storm response, debris removal, and other emergency activities.
• Performs heavy manual labor, including lifting, digging, shoveling, raking, compacting, and material handling.
• Responds professionally to questions from residents and refers complaints or service requests to the appropriate supervisor.
• Maintains accurate basic records, inspection checklists, and work documentation as assigned.
• Performs additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Working Conditions:

• Work is performed primarily outdoors in changing and sometimes severe weather, including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, and snow.
• Regular exposure to moving traffic, heavy equipment, noise, dust, fumes, vibration, uneven terrain, and other jobsite hazards.
• Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and repetitive movement.
• Must regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally move heavier materials with assistance or mechanical equipment.
• Work schedules may include four 10-hour shifts or five 8-hour shifts and may vary based on operational needs.
• Must be available for extended hours and emergency call-outs during storms, snow events, infrastructure failures, or peak construction periods.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Working knowledge of roadway maintenance, asphalt repair, grading, drainage, and pavement-preservation practices, or the ability to learn them.
• Skill in safely operating assigned vehicles, heavy equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
• Knowledge of work-zone safety, traffic-control procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
• Basic mechanical aptitude for inspecting equipment and recognizing maintenance or safety concerns.
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, work plans, maps, and basic measurements.
• Ability to work independently and cooperatively, communicate professionally, and complete assignments accurately and on time.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment, adapt to changing priorities, and work safely around employees, contractors, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Valid Utah Driver License with an acceptable driving record required.
• One year of experience in road maintenance, construction, public works, heavy equipment operation, or a related field preferred; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
• Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) within the timeframe established by the City if not already licensed.
• Must obtain and maintain job-related certifications or training required by the City.
• Must pass a criminal background check and other applicable pre-employment requirements.
