Position Purpose:
The Peritoneal/Education RN staff nurse is proficient in providing various peritoneal dialysis therapies to patients with chronic renal failure. Also, as an educator, he/she is responsible for ensuring that the peritoneal dialysis staff has been adequately trained in their specific job to ensure that quality care is given.
This position reports to the Program Director.
Key Job Activities:
Clinical
Completes the admission process as outlined in policies and procedures.
Completes pre- and post-treatment physical and mental assessment.
Supervises the peritoneal dialysis patients:
o Performs competent peritoneal dialysis treatments
o Performs set-up and maintenance of peritoneal dialysis equipment
o Troubleshoots machine alarms as appropriate
o Safely operate all dialysis related equipment
Seeks to improve work processes and participates in work improvement process and committees.
Teaches patients by using appropriate nursing standards requiring assessment, planning and delivery of patient care.
Assists physicians during patient rounds.
Takes appropriate action in anticipation of potential life-threatening or emergency situations.
Uses equipment and supplies in a safe and cost-efficient manner.
Guides and apprises ancillary personnel in the performance of technical skills; corrects actual or potential incidents of staff, environment, and/or equipment deficiencies.
Organizes and prioritizes nursing activities in an efficient and effective manner.
Participates actively and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to develop a common approach or to modify health care needs.
Recommends changes in the patient's treatment based on the patient’s current needs.

Patient Education & Research
Trains patients for home CAPD/CCPD, including appropriate record keeping and patient follow-up and support. This will include nursing histories, chart audits, phone calls to and from patients, home visits and clinic visits.
Completes mandatory educational requirements including but not limited to: fire, safety, infection control and CPR.
Reviews and updates training manuals, policy and procedure manuals, develops and presents in-service, evaluates personnel, develops criteria to measure level of staff performance if needed.
Attends continuing education programs.
Actively participates in unit programs, which provide clinical experiences for staff members.
Participates in the development of unit specific standards of care.
Participates in data collection for comparative and trending; identifies opportunities for improvement.
Utilizes concepts of Adult Education/Lifelong Learning in program planning, implementation and evaluation.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Successful completion of Hospital and Departmental orientation programs
At least 12 months’ experience in clinical nursing is preferred and an additional six (6) months’ experience in nursing care of the ESRD patient in a dialysis center
Knowledge and Skills:
Bilingual in English and Spanish is required.
Experience in EPIC and MEDITECH software systems preferred.
Certifications/Licenses:
Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois
