Job Description

Area Medical Director - Oncology

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Area Medical Director - Oncology based in United States.

This senior physician leadership role serves as the primary medical presence across a defined U.S. geography within the community oncology market. The position combines medical affairs expertise, field execution, scientific communication, and cross-functional leadership to support appropriate adoption of advanced oncology diagnostics. You will build relationships with community oncologists, key opinion leaders, and multidisciplinary field teams while shaping regional medical strategy. The role offers significant autonomy to identify priorities, translate broader strategy into field action, and surface clinical insights that inform evidence generation and development initiatives. You will also contribute to physician education, clinical collaborations, and the secure, compliant communication of complex scientific evidence. Approximately 50% of the role is field-based, with extensive regional travel and customer engagement.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead medical strategy and physician engagement across a defined geographic region, focusing on priority community oncology accounts and high-value relationships.
  • Conduct 12–18 physician-level engagements per quarter and maintain regular field presence, including approximately four ride days per month.
  • Establish relationships with medical leads at key regional accounts and ensure timely engagement with accounts requiring medical support.
  • Serve as the primary physician escalation point for regional medical inquiries, ensuring timely responses and complete documentation in the CRM.
  • Partner with Medical Science Liaison, sales, marketing, and other field leaders through recurring planning and strategy sessions to align scientific and commercial priorities.
  • Participate in account strategy reviews, regional planning, and quarterly business reviews with medical leadership.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of oncology evidence and diagnostic portfolios, addressing clinical questions and escalating complex issues to appropriate medical experts.
  • Host, present, or observe regional educational programs and lead physician- or patient-facing educational initiatives, webinars, or podcasts.
  • Ensure scientific communications remain consistent, accurate, and compliant, while documenting recurring objections and coordinating appropriate medical escalations.
  • Identify opportunities for clinical evidence generation, including potential histology-specific clinical trial concepts, investigator-sponsored studies, and real-world evidence initiatives.
  • Generate actionable regional clinical insights and provide regular written reports to inform medical and organizational strategy.
  • Identify and develop qualified KOL collaboration opportunities and maintain accurate engagement records.
  • Support other medical affairs, clinical development, and strategic initiatives as assigned.

Requirements:

  • M.D. or D.O. with board certification in oncology, hematology, or a directly related clinical specialty.
  • 5–8+ years of relevant clinical or medical affairs experience following board certification, or equivalent field-based experience.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise across multiple tumor histologies and working knowledge of the molecular residual disease diagnostic landscape.
  • Experience in a field-based medical affairs, clinical development, or medical education role within oncology diagnostics, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or a related healthcare environment.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex clinical data and scientific evidence effectively to community oncologists and physician audiences.
  • Deep understanding of solid tumor oncology, MRD biology, assay methodologies, and the clinical application of oncology diagnostics.
  • Experience with cfDNA-based or MRD testing platforms, such as ctDNA-based assays, is preferred.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally with commercial, medical science, marketing, and other field teams is preferred.
  • Familiarity with clinical trial design, investigator-sponsored research, or real-world evidence programs is an advantage.
  • Working proficiency with Salesforce or a comparable CRM for engagement tracking, documentation, and compliance.
  • Ability to analyze clinical publications and evidence landscapes and translate them into clear scientific narratives and objection-handling approaches.
  • Understanding of medical affairs compliance requirements, including fair-balance principles and appropriate boundaries around off-label communication.
  • High level of autonomy, with the ability to define priorities, build processes, and execute effectively in ambiguous or rapidly evolving environments.
  • Strong executive presence, communication skills, data-driven decision-making, and the ability to collaborate effectively across medical, commercial, and operational functions.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively within the assigned region, including customer meetings, educational programs, conferences, and internal events.

Benefits:

  • Base salary of $250,000–$360,000 USD for remote U.S. positions.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance for eligible employees and dependents.
  • Life and disability insurance coverage.
  • Fertility care benefits and complimentary testing for employees and their immediate families.
  • Pregnancy and baby bonding leave.
  • 401(k) benefits.
  • Commuter benefits.
  • Employee referral program.
  • Remote home-office work combined with approximately 50% field-based activity.
  • Extensive professional exposure through physician engagement, educational programs, conferences, and cross-functional initiatives.
