Everyone deserves a place to rest. Join the Gateway West Shelter team providing trauma-informed care to our most vulnerable. We are hiring a Lead Dorm Monitor to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.

SCHEDULE
Full-time, rotating, including weekend and holiday coverage to support the operations of a 24/7 shelter.

ABOUT GATEWAY WEST
Gateway West is the City’s largest shelter and serves an average of 600 people per night, with cold winter nights bringing in more than 700 people. The shelter offers a safe and welcoming environment to men and women experiencing homelessness in Albuquerque. The center is open year-round, offering meals, a warm bed, and secure under-bed storage. Shuttle service is provided daily. Gateway Center provides low, barrier, trauma informed overnight beds for transition to housing. The shelter provides easy access to services needed for case management, job searching, and other supportive services. Success is an exit to safe, stable housing, and a plan for on-going support.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT?
You are going to start building your leadership skills! You will be critical in maintaining a safe, clean, and supportive environment within the shelter dormitories while also serving as the supervisor in charge when supervisory staff are not present. In addition to dorm monitor responsibilities, you will start providing leadership, shift oversight, and escalation for staff and operations.

  • Lead Shift Operations: Support Shift Supervisor during assigned shifts, including taking over supervisory duties in their absence. Ensure smooth operations, smooth shift transitions and debriefs, proper staff coverage, and accurate documentation. Lead shift transitions
  • Team Leadership & Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to Dorm Monitors and Intake staff, fostering a collaborative and trauma-informed work environment.
  • Resident Community-building, Monitor dormitory areas, enforce shelter policies, and respond to emergencies to maintain a safe and supportive environment. Foster a positive community among residents through group activities and social connection. Assist residents with basic needs, including referrals to job training, medical care, and housing resources.
  • Crisis Management & Problem-Solving: Serve as the point of escalation for staff and residents, leading crisis interventions and coordinating emergency procedures through a trauma-informed lens. Respond appropriately to emergencies, including medical or behavioral crises.
  • Safety & Compliance: Review incident reports, maintain accurate records, and communicate supply and operational needs to supervisors. Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including cleanliness and emergency procedures.

  • You keep operations running seamlessly, ensuring coverage, and maintaining accurate documentation and logs, and incident reporting. You build up your team with coaching, training, and hands-on support.

​​​MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; some college in social services preferred.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in a shelter, residential, or human services setting.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Basic computer skills for reporting; HMIS knowledge preferred.

Other Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to de-escalate conflict and respond to crises.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and act as shift lead in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care, homelessness issues, and available community resources.
