Our Gateway West Shelter team in Albuquerque is searching for our next Shelter Supervisor to jump in and lead our team making an impact every day. If you're trauma-informed and know your way around shelter operations, we can't wait to meet you!

SCHEDULE
5 days, Full-time, includes weekends. Supervisors are expected to remain flexible when possible in order to meet the needs of the 24/7 shelter, including holiday coverage.

ABOUT GATEWAY
Gateway West is the City’s largest shelter and serves an average of 600 people per night, with cold winter nights bringing in more than 700 people. The shelter offers a safe and welcoming environment to men and women experiencing homelessness in Albuquerque. The center is open year-round, offering meals, a warm bed, and secure under-bed storage. Shuttle service is provided daily. The shelter provides overnight beds, easy access to services needed for case management, job searching, and other supportive services. Success is an exit to safe, stable housing, and a plan for ongoing support.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT?
You will oversee the operations of the shelter, ensuring a safe, efficient, and supportive environment for residents. As Shelter Supervisor, you'll focus on staff management, operational logistics, client services, and compliance with regulatory standards. You'll play a critical role in fostering a welcoming atmosphere and promoting the well-being of individuals experiencing homelessness.

  • Supervise and empower your team by guiding staff through daily responsibilities, monitoring performance, and fostering a supportive environment that ensures guests receive quality care.
  • Manage guest interactions and discipline by applying consistent policies, resolving conflicts quickly, and leading de-escalation efforts to maintain safety and dignity for everyone.
  • Coordinate staffing and activity schedules so shifts run smoothly, common areas are covered, and guests have access to structured programs that promote engagement and stability.
  • Ensure operational excellence by overseeing cleanliness and organization in shared spaces, enforcing compliance, and making sure staff have the tools and resources they need to succeed.
  • Handle data and reporting with precision by entering census information accurately, documenting incidents, and providing timely updates to leadership for informed decision-making.
  • Driving - some staff are part of a rotation of drivers operating a 15-passenger vehicle (can discuss during interview process)

WHAT MAKES YOU A GREAT SHELTER SUPERVISOR?

    You're a leader! You have proven ability to supervise and support staff in a high-demand environment, ensuring staff are effective in their roles and providing quality service to guests. You always model safety, organization, trauma-informed care, self-control and integrity in interactions with staff and guests. You're confident in crisis management and conflict resolution. You're skilled in de-escalating guest behavior situations and providing effective conflict resolution to maintain a safe and supportive environment. You're committed to quality data management. You stay on top of entering and managing census data, including using systems such as the Citywide Emergency Bed Tracker to ensure accurate reporting. You're an expert in operational oversight. You maintain - and teach your team how to maintain - the cleanliness, organization, and safety of shelter common areas. You understand how to manage discipline and appeals process. You're experienced in enforcing and reporting on guest discipline policies, working closely with shelter leadership to maintain consistency and fairness in addressing behavior situations. MOST IMPORTANTLY, you're trauma-informed. You are committed to providing care and support to individuals impacted by trauma, creating a respectful, safe, and non-judgmental environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of 2 years in social services or shelter management, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally as needed. - If operating 15-passenger vehicle, possess a valid CDL or have the ability to get one.
  • Previous supervisory experience in a shelter or similar environment is highly desirable.

Other Requirements

  • Deep understanding of trauma-informed care principles and a commitment to applying them in practice.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural competency.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain self-control, professionalism and confidentiality in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office and client management software.
