About This Position

We are searching for dedicated Housing Support Specialists to join our newest team at the Women's Housing Navigation shelter in Albuquerque, New Mexico!


SCHEDULE
Days, Evenings/Nights depending on shift assignment
Full-time, may include weekends
Subject to change based on program coverage needs

OBJECTIVE AND POSITION SUMMARY
The Housing Support Specialist is responsible for providing collaborative intensive coordination with the female residents. This role involves overseeing resident activities, ensuring compliance with shelter policies, and providing support to individuals experiencing homelessness. Incumbents in the position will provide support service strategies to clients who have a history of homelessness, mental health challenges and housing instability in an effort to gain access and maintain health, mental health, housing and vocational stability; including providing comprehensive case management, assisting guests in developing and executing individualized plans to secure and maintain housing, and connecting them with community resources.

SPECIALIZATIONS

  • Crisis Intervention: Expertise in recognizing and managing crises effectively, providing immediate support to residents in distress
  • Conflict Resolution: Skills in mediating disputes among residents and promoting peaceful coexistence in the shelter environment
  • Mental Health Awareness: Understanding of mental health issues that may affect residents, enabling appropriate support and referrals
  • Cultural Competency: Ability to work with diverse populations, understanding and respecting various cultural backgrounds and experiences
  • Community Resource Navigation: Knowledge of local resources, services, and programs available to assist residents with housing, employment, and healthcare needs
  • Safety and Compliance: Familiarity with health and safety regulations specific to shelter operations, ensuring a secure environment for residents
  • Group Facilitation: Skills in organizing and leading group activities that promote social engagement and support among residents
  • Trauma-informed approach, responsible for providing care and support to individuals impacted by trauma, ensuring a respectful, safe, and non-judgmental environment


The Housing Support Specialist has a variety of responsibilities, including, but not limited to:

Female Resident Supervision and Community Engagement

  • Monitor the dormitory area to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents
  • Enforce shelter policies and procedures regarding behavior, cleanliness, and safety
  • Encourage positive interactions among female residents and promote a sense of community within the dormitory
  • Organize and facilitate group activities that foster social connections and support among residents


Housing Support Specialists working night shifts will need to:

  • Announce Curfew: Remind residents of curfew time and ensure everyone is inside the dormitory
  • Lights Out: Ensure lights are turned off (except in designated areas) and enforce quiet hours


Support and Assistance

  • Provide emotional support and encouragement to female residents, fostering a positive atmosphere
  • Assist residents with basic needs, including referrals to resources such as job training, medical care, and housing services
  • Facilitate conflict resolution among residents and report any serious issues to supervisory staff
  • Conduct intake assessments to identify client needs, strengths, and barriers to housing
  • Develop and implement individualized service plans tailored to securing permanent housing


Safety, Compliance, Record Keeping

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including cleanliness and emergency procedures
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations, including medical crises or behavioral issues
  • Maintain accurate records of female resident attendance, incidents, violations and daily activities
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for effective case management


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

Education /Background:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; In lieu of education equivalent experience in social services or related fields will also be considered
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally as needed
  • Certified Peer Support Worker preferred
  • Experience working in a shelter, community organization, or social service setting is a plus
  • Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness or in a supportive housing setting is highly desirable

  • Understanding of homelessness issues and familiarity with available community resources
  • Understanding of the critical importance of trauma-informed care in supporting participants
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care principles and a commitment to applying them in practice
  • Equipped to recognize the impact of trauma on individuals’ experiences and behaviors, and actively implement practices that promote safety, empowerment, and healing
  • Foster an environment of trust and respect that plays a vital role in helping the participants navigate their challenges and work towards stability and recovery
  • Compassionate and non-judgmental attitude towards individuals experiencing homelessness
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural competency
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to handle conflicts constructively
  • ​​​​​​​Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office and client management software
