Job Description

American Wood Fibers (AWF) is a manufacturer of both consumer and industrial products that are sold to multiple manufacturers as well as pet, agricultural, and home-heating markets. AWF is comprised of 450+ employees and holds operations at 11 locations, generating over $100M in annual sales revenue. We are currently seeking a candidate for the 1st Shift Log Yard Lead role in our Jamestown, CA facility.

Primary duties to include, but not limited to the following:

  1. SAFETY

Is an active participant and leader in safety on a daily basis. Responsible for administering safety policy, PPE enforcement, training, cleanliness and good housekeeping of all work areas with emphasis on meeting OSHA standards. Conducts or assists in regular safety meetings on a monthly basis or as needed.


II. OPERATIONS

Works with Operations Manager on general planning, scheduling, directing and monitoring of all Log yard activities including; processing systems, receiving, inventory, and Heavy Equipment operations to achieve the safest and most efficient operations possible within established budget guidelines. Meets or exceeds the requirements of the production plan within the plant capabilities, and delivers on time to meet the expectations of both internal and external customers. Accountable for department costs, inventory levels, operating methods and effective use of people-hours, skills, machines, equipment and facilities. Maintains communications and works closely with Operations Manager and Raw Materials buyers, Maintenance and Operations to assist in keeping the facilities and equipment in good order, and maintaining raw material supply chains.


  1. RAW MATERIALS
    • Assist in gathering market information and providing feedback to buyers.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers.
    • Coordinate with the Operations Manager and buyers to optimize purchases and avoid excess or off spec inventory.
    • Maintain and evaluate raw material inventory levels and purchasing requirements.
    • Coordinate with Operations Manager and buyer on working through return to supplier issues with QA (rejections, damage, etc.).
    • Evaluates vendors and provides feedback to Raw Material Buyer.

IV. QUALITY

  • Supports, maintains, and verifies that all current quality assurance measures are being followed in accordance with written quality programs & SOPs, and communicated to direct reports.
  • Monitors daily in-process inspection data to maintain awareness of trending.
  • Ensures all incoming log deliveries meet our documented quality specifications for length, diameter, moisture and age/condition (rotten, punky, etc.)
  • Communicates any observed quality issues to Plant Manager & Raw Material Buyers immediately as they occur, so they can be addressed appropriately.


V. PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS

  • Assists with completing and presenting performance evaluations for log yard personnel.
  • May recommend promotions or transfers of personnel.
  • Assists in monitoring attendance of subordinates as well as compliance to policies, rules and regulations.
  • Recommends and implements disciplinary action as required.


  1. INVENTORY & RECEIVING
  • Manages the log yard operators, log inventory & processing in a manner that maximizes efficiency, safety & productivity
  • Maintains safe, organized and documented log decks to achieve FIFO usage
  • Audits & documents log yard inventories at the end of each month in coordination with Plant Manager & Accounting.
  • Manages waste inventory levels to keep yard clean, organized & safe.
  • Monitors yield loss and looks for ways to improve
  • Timely & accurate collection of paperwork & data related to incoming log receiving
  • Management of incoming log documentation to ensure compliance with weights & measures requirements


  1. MOBILE EQUIPMENT
  • Ensure all log yard personnel are trained & signed off on how to properly inspect, safely operate & efficiently run log yard mobile equipment before becoming a full-time operator
  • Ensure all log yard personnel are performing thorough & accurate pre-trips of the mobile equipment at the start of each shift and document results via JotForm system.
  • Immediately notifies Maintenance Supervisor & Plant Manager of damage, performance issues or other safety/maintenance areas of concern with mobile equipment.
  • Documents repairs needed with Llumin work orders
  • Documents any log yard damage, injuries or near misses in Velocity for further root cause investigation


  1. PERSONNEL
  • Ensure new & existing log yard personnel are properly trained to inspect & safely run mobile equipment
  • Ensure log yard personnel follow all AWF policies, procedures & work instructions
  • In coordination with the Plant Manager & HR, document & address employee performance issues in a timely fashion, including: tardiness & attendance, efficiency, and disregard for safety, company property & procedures.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years of relevant management experience
  • Logging/wood industry experience, preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles and applications associated with manufacturing operations, safety and quality programs, inventory controls, and maintenance
  • Previous experience/strong understanding of budgeting/expense management with a basic understanding of financial and accounting practices
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to use e-mail and Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Power Point and/or Access)
  • Previous experience/broad understanding of safety systems and enforcement of safety rules and policies
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate/lead, assess and develop employee skills
  • Planning and organizational skills, with the ability to balance production, raw material (log) inventory, and Heavy Equipment needs
  • Highly motivated, results oriented, and driven with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment


COMPENSATION : $25.00 -$31.00
