VA Palo Alto Health Care System Elevator Inspection Services
Position SummarySeeking an experienced Qualified Elevator Inspector to perform elevator inspection services for the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. The selected individual will conduct semi-annual, annual, and four-year inspections of vertical transportation equipment located throughout multiple VA medical facilities. The inspector will evaluate elevator systems for compliance with applicable safety codes, prepare detailed inspection reports, identify deficiencies, provide engineering recommendations, and support the Government in maintaining safe and reliable elevator operations.
This position requires extensive knowledge of elevator systems, ASME inspection standards, and the ability to prepare professional technical documentation.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Perform scheduled semi-annual, annual, and four-year inspections of passenger, freight, and hydraulic elevator systems.
- Inspect all elevators assigned under the contract in accordance with the approved inspection schedule.
- Conduct inspections in compliance with the latest editions of ASME A17.1 and ASME A17.2.
- Examine mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, safety, and operational components of each elevator system.
- Identify code deficiencies, safety concerns, and operational issues.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports documenting findings, deficiencies, recommendations, and applicable code references.
- Complete required ASME inspection checklists for electric and hydraulic elevators.
- Issue inspection certificates for each inspected elevator.
- Perform engineering evaluations of elevator life expectancy and remaining service life.
- Develop recommendations for modernization, replacement, communication upgrades, and other system improvements.
- Provide technical consultation to the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) regarding inspection findings.
- Respond to Government requests for clarification or consultation within the required timeframes.
- Coordinate inspection schedules with VA personnel and elevator maintenance contractors.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and documentation.
- Submit electronic and hard-copy reports within contract-required deadlines.
- Observe all OSHA, EPA, VA, and applicable safety requirements while performing inspections.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment while on Government property.
- Travel between multiple VA medical facilities throughout the contract area.
- Current Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) certification issued by ASME/NAESA.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience performing certified elevator inspections.
- Thorough knowledge of elevator systems, including traction and hydraulic elevators.
- Extensive knowledge of:
- ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators
- ASME A17.2 Inspectors' Manual
- OSHA safety regulations
- NFPA requirements applicable to elevator systems
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and manufacturer documentation.
- Strong technical writing and report preparation skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Experience inspecting elevators within hospitals or healthcare facilities.
- Previous experience performing inspections for Federal, VA, DoD, or other Government agencies.
- Familiarity with multiple elevator manufacturers and control systems.
- Experience developing life-cycle assessments and modernization recommendations.
