Senior Technical Specialist, AI Risk Assessment

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Technical Specialist, AI Risk Assessment based in the United States.

This is a unique opportunity for an AI safety expert to contribute to cutting-edge research focused on understanding and managing the risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems. In this role, you will combine technical research, governance expertise, and rigorous analytical methods to develop advanced risk assessment frameworks. You will help shape methodologies that inform industry practices, policy discussions, and responsible AI development. Working within a highly collaborative and intellectually demanding environment, you will lead research initiatives, improve assessment approaches, and communicate complex AI risk concepts to diverse stakeholders.

Accountabilities
  • Develop advanced techniques for identifying AI risk pathways, including threat modeling approaches that capture technical, societal, and sociotechnical dimensions.
  • Design and improve comprehensive risk assessment methodologies for evaluating emerging AI systems, including potential loss-of-control and catastrophic risk scenarios.
  • Model complex risk propagation, amplification effects, threshold dynamics, and interactions across interconnected social and technical systems.
  • Provide strategic and technical quality assurance for research initiatives, ensuring analytical rigor, methodological soundness, and accuracy.
  • Lead original research projects focused on AI risk management, safety frameworks, and evaluation methodologies aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate risk assessment approaches across research programs and strategic initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of technical standards, best practices, and frameworks for AI evaluation, risk measurement, and risk thresholds.
  • Translate complex research findings into clear, persuasive communications for technical experts, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
  • Support the advancement of responsible AI governance through innovative research and evidence-based recommendations.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in AI safety, AI alignment, AI governance, or related technical risk domains.
  • Strong understanding of advanced risk modeling approaches, including causal modeling, Bayesian networks, systems dynamics, or similar methodologies.
  • Experience analyzing complex systemic and sociotechnical risks, including risk propagation across interconnected systems.
  • Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to identify subtle weaknesses, assumptions, and limitations within complex technical arguments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain advanced concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated expertise through research publications, technical contributions, or equivalent professional achievements.
  • Strong systems-thinking mindset with the ability to work independently and approach ambiguous challenges with intellectual rigor.
  • Experience collaborating in fast-paced, research-driven environments requiring creativity, precision, and continuous learning.
  • Comfort working with uncertainty and rapidly evolving knowledge landscapes.
  • Background in complex systems theory, control theory, cybernetics, multi-scale modeling, or dynamical systems is highly desirable.
  • Experience with AI safety organizations, technical research institutions, policy organizations, or adjacent risk fields is a plus.
  • Familiarity with causal models, Bayesian analysis, semi-quantitative frameworks, or hypergraph-based risk analysis is advantageous.
