This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the design of critical high-voltage infrastructure supporting the transition to renewable energy.
You will lead protection and controls engineering activities for complex substation projects, transforming utility requirements and client needs into reliable, buildable solutions.
The position combines technical ownership, independent engineering judgment, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
You will create detailed design packages, including schematics, diagrams, and documentation that enable successful renewable energy interconnections.

The Substation Protection & Controls Engineer III will take ownership of protection and controls design activities for high-voltage substation projects, ensuring technical excellence, compliance, and successful project delivery. This role requires strong engineering expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, project teams, and technical stakeholders.
- Develop protection and control design packages for renewable energy substations, including single-line diagrams (SLDs), three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, relay layouts, and protection panel documentation.
- Design collector and interconnection substation P&C systems while applying appropriate protection philosophies and engineering standards.
- Translate utility interconnection requirements, client specifications, and project constraints into clear and practical engineering deliverables.
- Produce high-quality AutoCAD Electrical and Substation Design Suite (SDS) drawings following established design standards and workflows.
- Coordinate with power systems, physical substation, civil, and structural engineering teams to deliver integrated project solutions.
- Review technical deliverables from subcontractors and consultants to ensure accuracy, quality, and alignment with project schedules.
- Support client discussions by presenting design assumptions, addressing technical feedback, and acting as a subject matter resource for early project phases.
- Ensure engineering documentation complies with applicable industry standards, safety requirements, codes, and utility expectations.
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering workflows, templates, automation, and overall design efficiency.
- Develop work plans, manage assigned tasks, meet project deadlines, and provide technical guidance or mentorship to less experienced team members.
The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in substation protection and controls engineering, strong technical knowledge of high-voltage systems, and the ability to independently deliver complex engineering designs. Candidates should be detail-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable working with evolving project requirements.
- Associate degree or higher in an engineering-related discipline required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in substation Protection & Controls (P&C) design.
- Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD, including AutoCAD Electrical, for production-level engineering drawings.
- Demonstrated experience developing:
- Single-line diagrams (SLDs)
- Three-line diagrams
- AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams
- Protection and control design documentation
- Strong understanding of high-voltage substation equipment, protection schemes, and engineering principles.
- Ability to work independently while applying sound engineering judgment and knowing when to seek technical guidance.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for client-facing interactions and technical discussions.
- Excellent organization skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and fast-moving assignments.
- Experience with Substation Design Suite (SDS) integrated with AutoCAD Electrical is preferred.
- Experience designing renewable energy interconnection substations is a plus.
- Consulting engineering, EPC project, or client-facing experience is preferred.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing subconsultants, or overseeing technical inputs is beneficial.
- Knowledge of coding, scripting, or process automation using Python is a plus.
- EIT certification is preferred.
