The Opportunity

We are looking for a high-energy, detail-oriented On-Site Safety Manager to lead the health and safety initiatives for our Reno, NV operations. This is an onsite role; you aren't just writing manuals—you are on the front lines ensuring our crews return home safely every night.. This position reports to the Senior Safety Manager and represents a direct connection with a major customer and our operations teams.

Responsibilities

Safety Execution & Risk Mitigation:

  • Lead by example, fostering an environment where it is culturally acceptable, encouraged, and actively welcomed for all personnel to ask, challenge, and provide feedback to any other person relative to health and safety performance.
  • Responsible for site-level implementation, execution, consistent enforcement, and verification of the Site-Specific HASP to ensure all work activities are completed in a safe and compliant manner.
  • Provides a site safety briefing/orientation to all visitors and construction workers before they are permitted to enter the site, covering at a minimum the contents of the Site-Specific HASP and pertinent safety considerations applicable to active site operations.
  • Assures that a Daily Safety Briefing is conducted for all personnel working on site prior to the start of work each day, covering safety-related information pertinent to each day’s work activities.
  • Ensures that only properly trained and qualified workers (including all Subcontractors operating on-site) are permitted to work on projects and maintain full compliance with GRC’s safety standards and OSHA requirements.
  • Performs regular field audits and unannounced inspections to identify and correct hazards, verify effectiveness of the HASP, and evaluate compliance with OSHA, DOT, internal, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Identify potential hazards in the pre-construction phase during site walk-throughs and develop specialized safety plans for high-risk crossings or complex utility environments.
  • Oversee the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) process and ensure all crews maintain rigorous traffic control (MOT) and excavation safety protocols in accordance with municipal requirements.
  • Support any and all construction and traffic control functions as needed to ensure safe and timely project completion.

Incident Management, Reporting & Training:

  • Continuously reinforce the expectation that all work-related injuries, illnesses, and incidents (including near misses) must be promptly reported.
  • Lead the full lifecycle of incident reporting, conduct/participate in incident investigations, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Promptly address and resolve any health and safety issues identified in a timely manner.
  • Develop, update, and run drills for site-specific Emergency Response Plans (ERP), including protocols for severe weather, trench collapse, or utility strikes.
  • Design and deliver safety training programs, including New Hire Orientation, Toolbox Talks, OSHA 10/30, and Competent Person training for trenching and shoring.
  • Collaborate to enforce our Safety First culture across all applicable job sites.

Regulatory Compliance, Fleet Oversight & Stakeholder Communication:

  • Regularly communicate with the Client on all matters pertaining to health and safety that occur onsite (incidents, safety concerns, safety performance, etc.).
  • Act as the primary point of contact for OSHA inspections, insurance adjusters, and safety representatives.
  • Oversee environmental compliance and hazards specific to regional construction, such as dust control mitigation, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), and hazardous spill response.
  • Track and report on safety performance metrics and KPIs, including Total Recordable Incident Rates (TRIR), Days Away/Restricted or Transferred (DART), and Experience Modification Rates (EMR), presenting findings to upper management.
  • Partner with the fleet department to ensure all machinery and vehicles meet safety standards and that operators are properly certified and vetted.
  • Fulfill safety representative responsibilities set forth in applicable manuals and the HASP.

Education & Background:

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, or a related field.

Preferred: Experience with directional drilling (HDD) safety and fiber optic installation hazards.

Must demonstrate one of the following combinations of certification and experience:

  • Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) CSP with at least 4 years of full-time relevant construction safety and health experience.
  • BCSP ASP, GSP, or SMS with at least 6 years of full-time relevant experience.
  • BCSP CHST or OHST with at least 8 years of full-time relevant experience.

Technical Skills & Certifications

  • Completed the OSHA 500 course for construction within the last 24 months, remaining current for the duration of the project.
  • Provide proof of non-expired completion of a Red Cross (or approved equal) certification for Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillation (AED).
  • Provide proof of completion of FMCSA compliant 2-hour drug and alcohol reasonable suspicion supervisory training.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Preferred: Experience with safety management software (e.g., Safety Culture/iAuditor) and Google Suite.

Additional Information

Salary Range: $110,000 - $130,000 Salary, based on experience

Location: Reno, NV - On-Site
