This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Legal Counsel, IP & Technology based in the United States.
This role provides strategic legal guidance across intellectual property, technology transactions, and commercial initiatives within a fast-growing consumer technology environment.
As the first dedicated IP counsel, you will help shape and execute the organization’s patent and trademark strategy.
You will manage valuable IP portfolios while advising teams on patents, trademarks, trade secrets, licensing, open source, and commercialization.
The position partners closely with Product, Engineering, Finance, Privacy, Marketing, and corporate development stakeholders.
You will also negotiate sophisticated commercial agreements and contribute to IP due diligence for strategic corporate transactions.
The role combines hands-on legal execution with high-impact counseling in a collaborative, technology-driven environment.

- Manage and develop the patent portfolio, working with outside counsel and legal service providers on prosecution matters, office actions, freedom-to-operate and product clearance analysis, and identification of inventions for patent applications.
- Manage and develop the trademark portfolio, including prosecution and enforcement activities, jurisdictional protection strategies, and collaboration with Marketing on trademark clearance and knock-out checks.
- Advise internal clients and business partners on intellectual property matters involving patents, trademarks, trade secrets, licensing, portfolio strategy, and commercial transactions.
- Draft, review, and negotiate complex agreements involving the development, licensing, transfer, protection, use, and commercialization of intellectual property.
- Provide legal guidance on open source licenses and related technology considerations.
- Counsel cross-functional teams on patent and trademark issues arising from commercial transactions, product development, marketing activities, and broader business initiatives.
- Review social media and promotional materials for intellectual property and consumer protection compliance.
- Support corporate development and transaction teams with intellectual property due diligence, identifying ownership issues, potential risks, and compliance considerations.
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Finance, Privacy, Marketing, and other stakeholders to align legal recommendations with business objectives while protecting valuable IP assets.
- Monitor developments in patent, trademark, technology, and IP law and apply relevant insights to legal counseling, portfolio strategy, and contract negotiations.
- Direct and coordinate outside legal providers while maintaining effective oversight of IP matters, priorities, and expenditures.
- Contribute to the development of scalable IP processes, strategies, and practices as the organization continues to grow.
- J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and active membership in good standing with at least one state bar.
- At least 5 years of legal experience, preferably with a national or regional law firm focused on patent prosecution involving consumer software and hardware technologies.
- Demonstrated experience advising on intellectual property matters, particularly patents, trademarks, licensing, trade secrets, and open source.
- Experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial agreements involving intellectual property rights.
- Strong understanding of IP portfolio management, patent and trademark prosecution, transactional IP counseling, and technology-related legal issues.
- Experience working with or managing outside counsel and legal service providers.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Finance, Privacy, and other cross-functional teams in a fast-paced business environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice to both legal and non-legal stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing demands.
- Demonstrated interest in using AI-powered tools and technology to improve legal efficiency and workflows.
- A technical undergraduate degree, such as Computer Science, is a plus.
- Trademark prosecution experience is preferred.
- Prior in-house legal experience within a consumer technology company is advantageous.
- Comfort working in a rapidly evolving environment where legal priorities must be balanced with commercial and operational objectives.
- Annual U.S.-based salary range of $130,000–$200,000, with final compensation determined by factors including geographic location, knowledge, skills, experience, and professional background.
