Job Title: Senior Safety and Environmental Specialist

Location: Richmond, Virginia

Starting Compensation Range: $82,000 - $95,000 per year

What You Will Do:

  • Provide on-site inspections in shop and field environments that include auditing facilities and job sites and implementing hazard corrective actions; provide follow up on hazard corrective actions
  • Perform audits of field technicians that include checks and one-on-one observations of technicians and assessments of behavior in completing job tasks
  • Determine and implement required Job Safety Analyses and controls for high-hazard tasks
  • Guide CMCO locations in implementation of the EHS work plans
  • Ensure collection and storage of EHS related documentation and trailing records
  • Execute activities concerning collection, storage, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste and tracking of emissions
  • Determine annual audit scope and location schedule based on independent incident-trend and risk analysis
  • Provide training modules and facilitate on-site training to technicians and management
  • Create training and communications content, deliver effective and interactive EHS presentations, workshops, and training programs
  • Exhibit advanced proficiency in digital EHS platforms and drive their effective utilization, optimization, and continuous improvement across the organization
  • Create content and communicate monthly safety topics to branches
  • Communicate triennial forklift evaluation requirements to branches
  • Work in coordination with team to achieve Continuous Improvement goals and objectives
  • Review and report on audit results, update programs, and track hazard corrective actions
  • Compile data and information for analysis of hazard and safety incident trends and develop corporate EHS policy, programs, and standards
  • Represent organization during visits with external and internal customers in a variety of meetings to include customer sites
  • Coordinate annual industrial hygiene sampling for all locations identified by the Safety and Environmental Manager
  • Coordinate with Safety Coordinator to schedule special safety related training classes (biennial first responder, SafePRO, etc.)
  • Provide support and guidance to all locations to help CMCO achieve its corporate commitment to EHS
  • Serve as Carter’s designated representative to OSHA, MSHA, and state environmental agencies
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to Safety and Environmental Specialist I staff as needed
  • Represent organization during visits with external and internal customers in a variety of meetings to include customer sites
  • Serve as project manager for all Safety and Environmental initiatives, ensuring projects are planned, executed, and completed on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational objectives
  • Work in coordination with team to achieve Continuous Improvement goals and objectives
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

What We’re Looking For:

  • Minimum of four years occupational safety and health experience
  • Experience leading others in achieving environmental, health, and safety program excellence on a company level
  • Bachelor's degree in EHS or related field preferred
  • Proficiency in digital EHS platforms Intermediate to advanced skills in computer-based technology
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Excellent driving record
  • Willingness to travel extensively within Carter Machinery's geographical footprint required
  • Willingness to work extra hours, including days, nights, and/or weekends to meet business demands

  • Advanced proficiency in digital EHS platforms
  • Application of environmental, health, and safety concepts
  • Leading EHS Team in addressing specific reporting and recordkeeping of regulatory agencies
  • Functioning well in a fast-paced environment and coordinating multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Quickly evaluating facts and maintaining good judgment when making decisions

Physical Requirements: 

  • Regularly required to sit and talk or hear
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms
