JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Director of Athletics, the Head Coach for Men's Basketball provides leadership, management, and oversight for all aspects of the University's NCAA Division II Men's Basketball program. Responsibilities include coaching, recruiting and retaining qualified student-athletes, supervising coaching staff, developing competitive strategies, managing program operations and budgets, supporting student-athlete academic success, and ensuring compliance with all applicable NCAA, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), University, federal, and state rules, regulations, and policies. This position requires a regular, reliable, and consistent on-campus presence to effectively perform coaching, supervisory, recruiting, and administrative responsibilities and is not suitable for remote work except as approved in accordance with University policy.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provides leadership and direction for all aspects of the Men's Basketball program, including planning, organizing, administering, and evaluating all program activities.
- Organizes, prepares, and conducts individual and team practices, conditioning sessions, competitions, and other athletic activities designed to maximize student-athlete development and team success.
- Develops and implements offensive, defensive, and special game strategies while evaluating individual and team performance throughout the season.
- Develops and implements comprehensive recruiting strategies to identify, evaluate, recruit, and retain academically qualified student-athletes in compliance with NCAA and SIAC regulations.
- Monitors the academic progress, eligibility, and overall well-being of student-athletes while promoting academic achievement, personal responsibility, sportsmanship, and good citizenship.
- Ensures full compliance with all NCAA, SIAC, University, conference, federal, and state rules, regulations, and reporting requirements applicable to intercollegiate athletics.
- Supervises, evaluates, and mentors assistant coaches, graduate assistants, student workers, and other personnel assigned to the program.
- Prepares, administers, and monitors the program budget while ensuring responsible stewardship of University resources.
- Coordinates team travel, scheduling, equipment management, practice logistics, and other operational aspects of the program.
- Collaborates with Athletics administration on fundraising initiatives, alumni engagement, community outreach, promotional activities, and special events that support the Men's Basketball program.
- Represents the University and Athletics Department in a professional manner when interacting with student-athletes, parents, alumni, donors, media representatives, conference officials, community organizations, and the public.
- Maintains accurate program records and prepares required reports in accordance with University, NCAA, and conference requirements.
- Attends departmental meetings, University functions, professional development activities, and other events as assigned.
- Maintains a regular, reliable, and consistent on-campus presence to provide direct supervision of student-athletes and staff and to effectively carry out the essential functions of the position.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Comprehensive knowledge of the sport of basketball, including coaching strategies, player development, and game management.
- Knowledge of NCAA Division II rules, SIAC regulations, recruiting practices, eligibility requirements, and compliance standards.
- Knowledge of effective recruiting techniques and the ability to identify and evaluate prospective student-athletes.
- Ability to lead, motivate, mentor, and develop student-athletes while fostering academic success and personal growth.
- Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate employees.
- Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, employees, alumni, community partners, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to interpret and apply University policies, NCAA regulations, and conference rules.
- Knowledge of budget preparation, fiscal management, and sound business practices.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and make effective administrative decisions.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position has direct supervisory responsibility for assistant coaches, graduate assistants, student employees, and other personnel assigned to the Men's Basketball program
.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Other duties performed as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible collegiate basketball coaching experience or an equivalent combination of coaching experience at the collegiate or professional level.
- Demonstrated experience recruiting student-athletes in an NCAA or comparable intercollegiate athletics environment.
- Demonstrated experience supervising personnel and managing athletic program operations.
- Master's degree is preferred.
- Previous NCAA Division II coaching experience is preferred.
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid driver's license.
- Must maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with University requirements.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, or the ability to obtain within the timeframe established by the University.
- Must successfully complete all NCAA and University-required compliance and recruiting education.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is performed in offices, athletic facilities, and outdoor venues and requires frequent interaction with student-athletes, employees, and the public.
- Frequent evening, weekend, holiday, and extended work hours are required based on practice, competition, recruiting, and travel schedules.
- Frequent overnight travel is required for recruiting and athletic competition.
- Work involves moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, demonstrating athletic skills, and occasionally lifting and moving equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, loud noise, and other conditions commonly associated with athletic facilities and sporting events.
