Job Description
The Design Specialist is an integral member of the communications team and will work to develop and maintain the visual identity for all communications (media, print, electronic, etc.) to consistently articulate Science Museum Oklahoma’s (SMO) mission, promote its programs, and strengthen the Museum’s brand identity across key stakeholder audiences. The Design Specialist works as a member of the communications team and works closely with senior staff on a variety of strategic initiatives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Execute the Museum’s graphic design function. This includes marketing materials, signage, print materials, large-scale graphics, etc.
- Seek out, build, and maintain strong collaborative relationships within the Museum and the community that will enhance SMO’s ability to meet its strategic objectives. This includes members from the Museum’s programs, guest relations, exhibits, finance and other teams.
- With the support of the department manager and Director of Communications, develop, execute and evaluate marketing strategies to promote the museum and its programs. This includes working collaboratively with other members of the communications team to develop multi-media, multi-platform campaigns that maximize Museum resources to generate attendance, ticket sales, etc.
- As a member of the communications team, contribute to the development of the annual communications plan. This includes testing and evaluating new designs and strategies, adjusting as needed and revising the plan to accommodate changing needs of the institution or the environment.
- Work with vendors or consultants such as printers, copy editors, media, and videographers
- Represent the museum at events as needed
- Create other content including some photography and video, as needed.

- Ability to foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment where all guests feel welcome to experiment and create.
- Must work well with children and be comfortable engaging audiences in a fun and energetic way, including being silly and animated in front of both kids and adults.
- Strong background in STEM education, particularly hands-on, inquiry-based learning approaches.
- Excellent communication skills, including proficient writing and editing abilities.
- Approachable, kind, and confident demeanor, with a willingness to receive and implement feedback.
- Independent and proactive work ethic, with the ability to identify and complete tasks with minimal direction, while also thriving in a cooperative team environment.
- Practical understanding of safety protocols and best practices for conducting science demonstrations.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position works in a climate controlled office setting and may be subjected to a fast-paced decision making environment. This position:
- May require working on a computer for long periods of time, using a keyboard, viewing a digital screen.
- Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds of computer equipment or paper supplies).
This position may require the employee to drive for business purposes in either their own vehicle or a vehicle provided by the Museum. Employees that drive for business purposes must be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check and provide proof of insurance and a valid license to drive on an annual basis.
This position has been designated as a Safety Sensitive position because this position operates a vehicle for business purposes. Due to HB 3127, Safety Sensitive positions will be subject to a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy, no matter their status as a Medical Marijuana License holder, as outlined in our Employee Handbook and in accordance with state law.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
This position has no direct or indirect supervisory responsibilities. This position must maintain positive working relationships with management, employees, applicants, vendors and the general public. With approval from the Director and Creative Manager, may contract with copy editors, graphic designers, production firms, etc. as needed to achieve objectives and relieve staff workload.
