Job Description
The Myeloma and BMT/Cell Therapy outpatient APP functions as an independent healthcare provider who, working collaboratively within a health team is responsible for providing comprehensive care to both well and ill patients.
The APP demonstrates a high degree of clinical expertise in working with patients with acute and chronic illnesses, specifically myeloma patients in active treatment and bone marrow transplant/cell therapy patients. The APP is responsible for assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, health promotion and care coordination. The APP demonstrates an advanced level of medical clinical knowledge, communication and interdisciplinary collaboration, professionalism, and systems-based practice. The APP works with administrative, nursing, physician, to assure safe, effective, quality patient care and to promote educational and research missions.
This APP is dedicated to assisting patients and their families as they cope with multiple myeloma and other plasma cell dyscrasias. The APP also manages patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapies. The APP is trained to manage the physical and psychological needs of the oncology patient and his or her family.
CORE ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients, including detailed medical histories and physical assessments. Interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests to establish diagnoses and formulate treatment plans for individuals with multiple myeloma and other plasma cell dyscrasias.
- Manage myeloma and other oncology patients in the outpatient cellular-immunotherapy transplant unit (CTU), including patients undergoing bone marrow transplant, CAR T-cell therapy, bispecific antibody therapy, and other intensive treatments.
- Manage acute and chronic complications of transplantation and cellular therapies
- Demonstrates proficiency in managing high-acuity settings with diverse and complex patient requirements, applying advanced clinical judgment, effective collaboration, and adaptability.
- Establish medical diagnoses alongside the physician.
- May need to oversee treatment infusions and supportive care needs.
- Write specific orders within the limits of the practice agreement/scope of practice including chemotherapy.
- Manages general medical and surgical conditions based on knowledge of the indications, contraindications, side effects, interactions and adverse reactions of pharmacologic agents and other relevant treatment modalities.
- Monitor patient response to therapy, manage side effects, and provide education on disease process and treatment expectations.
- Provide education and support to patients and families regarding treatment regimens, bone marrow transplantation, cellular therapies and the potential side effects of each.
- Provide appropriate direction to clinic staff regarding follow up patient care issues.
- Collaborates and communicates effectively with referring and primary health care providers, pharmacists, and other care team members.
- Manage independent outpatient clinical practice and coverage for collaborating physicians.
- Maintains accurate, complete, concise and timely documentation in the electronic medical record according to group practice.
- Participate in myeloma-focused clinical trials, research protocols, and quality improvement initiatives as appropriate.
- Participate in medical oncology/hematology specific clinical quality and research projects.
- Participates in learning opportunities.
- Participate in and accept on-call coverage assignments, inpatient, outpatient, various oncology specialties, weekend coverage and holiday coverage.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
· Nurse Practitioner: Master’s or Doctorate’s degree from accredited Nursing Program OR
· Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from accredited PA Program.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION
APRN:
· Active RN and APRN license in State of Florida.
· Active board certification as a NP in: Adult; Adult/Gerontology, Acute Care; Family.
· Care Acute Care Certification required or: 3 years of oncology experience and have a letter from a supervising MD verifying this or AOCNP certified (need 500 hours of practice to take exam)
OR
PA:
· Active PA license in State of Florida.
· Active PA board certification.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES
- Oncology experience required
- Malignant Hematology experience preferred.
- Myeloma and BMT/Cell therapy experience desired
