About This Position

The Department of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh seeks to recruit a full-time tenure-stream faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor in social epidemiology. We seek a scholar whose work examines how social and structural conditions shape health and health inequities, with substantive areas that may include discrimination, neighborhood and institutional environments, social and public policy, the criminal legal system, religion, and other structural determinants of health. The Department of Epidemiology is one of seven academic departments in the School of Public Health and is committed to generating rigorous, policy-relevant science that advances population health and health equity.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research program integrates social epidemiology with implementation science and systems science to understand and improve the uptake, adaptation, and impact of evidence-informed interventions, policies, and community-based strategies in community and clinical settings. Topical areas of interest to the department include cardiovascular epidemiology, public health nutrition and food policy, reproductive and perinatal epidemiology, and substance use, especially where these areas intersect with health equity and social or structural determinants of health.

The successful Candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program focused on structural and social determinants of health, with emphasis on translating epidemiologic evidence into action through partnerships with community organizations, public health systems, healthcare systems, and policy stakeholders.

Specific job duties will include:

• Developing and sustaining an independent, externally funded research program in social epidemiology with clear relevance to health equity and population health improvement

• Conducting collaborative research that uses epidemiologic methods together with implementation science, systems science, and related mixed-methods or community-engaged approaches to study how interventions, policies, and organizational or community processes affect health outcomes and equity

• Building interdisciplinary collaborations within and across the University of Pittsburgh, including with faculty working in social epidemiology, health equity, prevention science, implementation science, systems science, public health nutrition, cardiovascular health, reproductive and perinatal health, and substance use

• Establishing and maintaining research partnerships with community-based organizations, coalitions, public agencies, health systems, and other practice partners to support policy-relevant and action-oriented scholarship

• Teaching and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in epidemiology and related public health disciplines, including courses in social epidemiology and, where relevant, implementation science, systems science, health equity, or community-engaged research methods

• Contributing service to the Department, School, University, and profession through committee participation, mentorship, peer review, and leadership in collaborative academic initiatives

• Disseminating research findings through peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations, and products intended to inform practice, policy, and multi-sector action

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in epidemiology or a closely related discipline in public health or the social sciences by the time of appointment. Candidates should demonstrate an emerging or established program of scholarly productivity in social epidemiology or a related field, evidence of external funding or strong potential for external funding, and a clear commitment to teaching, mentoring, and service.

Preferred qualifications include:

• Demonstrated expertise in implementation science and systems science as applied to population health, prevention, or health equity research

• Experience conducting community-engaged, multi-sector, policy-relevant, or practice-oriented research

• Expertise in mixed-methods research that links epidemiologic analysis with implementation or systems approaches to study evidence adoption and chronic disease prevention in community or clinical settings

• Experience studying how evidence is adopted, implemented, diffused, or sustained in public health or community settings

• Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration across academic, healthcare, public health, and community settings

• Teaching experience in implementation science, systems science, food systems, or related topics/methods

• A record of peer-reviewed publication and funded or fundable research that shows strong potential for growth as an independent investigator

In addition to the qualifications above, candidates should have at least five years of research experience and demonstrated scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed publications, evidence of funded research or strong potential to secure external funding, and teaching or mentorship experience relevant to graduate public health education.

Interested candidates must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of current and future research directions, teaching statement, recent teaching evaluations, a statement describing commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and the names and contact information for three references. Review of applications will commence upon receipt of all materials and will continue until the position is filled.
