Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Physician Assistant (PA) to join our hospital-based Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) team. This position offers a dynamic blend of outpatient clinic responsibilities and inpatient surgical care in a high-acuity academic and trauma-centered environment. The role is approximately 2/3 clinic-based and 1/3 inpatient call coverage, including emergency department consults, trauma evaluations, and surgical rounding. The ideal candidate is an experienced surgical PA who is comfortable managing acute consults, perioperative care, and inpatient surgical patients with a high degree of autonomy in collaboration with attending OMFS surgeons.

Job Duties

  • Serve as first call for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service on a rotating basis, evaluating urgent consults and coordinating care with the attending surgeon
  • Evaluate emergency department and inpatient consultations related to facial trauma, odontogenic infections, facial pain, and other maxillofacial conditions
  • Round on hospitalized surgical patients, monitoring recovery and adjusting treatment plans in collaboration with the attending surgeon
  • Perform preoperative evaluations and postoperative management for patients undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures
  • Assist surgeons in the operating room as first or second assist during oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures
  • Rotate through outpatient clinic and procedural sessions, evaluating new patients and providing postoperative follow-up care
  • Participate in procedural-based clinic care, including wound care, incision and drainage, minor procedures, and perioperative management
  • Order and interpret laboratory studies and imaging to support surgical decision-making
  • Educate patients and families regarding surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and postoperative care
  • Maintain accurate and timely EMR documentation within a multidisciplinary hospital environment

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant (PA) by the State of New York
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, required within 90 days of service

Experience:

  • Minimum 2–4 years of Physician Assistant experience required
  • Prior surgical experience strongly preferred
  • Experience in OMFS, trauma surgery, ENT, plastics, emergency medicine, or other surgical subspecialties preferred
  • Experience managing inpatient consults and acute surgical patients strongly preferred

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to function independently in a fast-paced surgical environment
  • Comprehensive knowledge of perioperative and inpatient surgical management
  • Strong procedural and patient assessment skills
  • Proficiency in EMR systems and healthcare technology
