Job Description

Expert Audio Transcriber, Portuguese (Brazilian)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Expert Audio Transcriber, Portuguese (Brazilian) based in Brazil.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the development and evaluation of advanced speech and AI technologies. You will transform recordings of native Portuguese speakers into highly accurate, conventionally formatted transcripts. The work spans both controlled studio audio and natural conversations recorded in real-world acoustic environments. Your linguistic expertise will help shape the quality of speech recognition, dialogue, and evaluation systems. You will make nuanced decisions around dialect, orthography, speaker attribution, disfluencies, and non-speech events. Working alongside linguistic and quality teams, you will help maintain rigorous standards across diverse audio datasets. This is an expert-level role where language knowledge and careful judgment have a direct impact on AI performance.

Accountabilities
  • Transcribe audio recordings from native Portuguese speakers into accurate, time-aligned written text according to project-specific guidelines.

  • Apply appropriate conventions for speaker identification, overlapping speech, fillers, disfluencies, false starts, and non-speech events such as laughter, background noise, and music.

  • Make consistent orthographic and linguistic decisions when handling dialectal, colloquial, or code-switched speech.

  • Distinguish and accurately represent regional accents and relevant differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese.

  • Flag ambiguous audio segments, uncertain speaker attribution, and sound-quality issues according to established project conventions.

  • Thoroughly self-review each submission to ensure it meets the required quality standards before delivery.

  • Collaborate with QA reviewers on challenging linguistic cases, calibration sessions, and updates to transcription guidelines.

  • Maintain reliable output and accuracy while working within defined deadlines and weekly volume expectations.

Requirements
  • Native-level fluency in Portuguese, supported by lifelong residence or deep linguistic immersion in Brazil.

  • Strong command of Portuguese orthography, including the conventions established by the current Acordo Ortográfico.

  • Ability to recognize and accurately distinguish Brazilian Portuguese from European Portuguese when making transcription decisions.

  • Strong listening skills and familiarity with regional accents within the declared variety.

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in transcription, captioning, court reporting, broadcasting, translation, linguistic annotation, or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain word-level accuracy while working under deadline pressure.

  • Comfortable using web-based annotation platforms and variable-speed audio playback tools.

  • Reliable high-speed internet, quality headphones, and a quiet, suitable workspace.

  • Ability to commit to an agreed level of weekly volume during active project periods.

  • Strong attention to detail, consistency, judgment, and ability to work independently.

  • Preferred additional experience includes Portuguese linguistics, translation, journalism, media, Portuguese-language speech-data annotation, IPA or phonetic transcription, and verbatim or clean-verbatim transcription.

  • Knowledge of PALOP Portuguese varieties, such as Angolan, Mozambican, or Cape Verdean Portuguese, or familiarity with Galician is a plus.

Benefits
  • Paid pilot task before full onboarding, allowing both sides to calibrate expectations and quality standards.

  • Per-task or per-minute compensation, with rates determined by audio complexity and turnaround requirements.

  • Flexible scheduling with the ability to scale your workload according to active project availability.

  • Direct collaboration with experienced linguistic leads and QA reviewers.

  • Opportunities to be invited to additional expert projects across related domains.

  • Remote work from Brazil, providing flexibility around where and when you complete assigned work.

  • Opportunity to contribute to real-world AI development through high-quality linguistic expertise.
