Job Description
Allient Inc. is in growth mode and currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Allient Sacramento team! The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of rotating machinery, primarily electric motors and related mechanical assemblies. This role utilizes 3D CAD software to create and review designs, support manufacturing processes, and ensure products meet customer, quality, and manufacturability requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Create detailed parts and assembly drawings using 3D CAD software, primarily SolidWorks.
- Design rotating machinery, including electric motors, motor-related components, and higher-level mechanical assemblies.
- Follow ISO design control guidelines throughout the product development process.
- Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and block tolerance methods to engineering designs.
- Review customer-designed components and assemblies for accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance with requirements.
- Evaluate subcontractor capabilities to ensure technical requirements can be met for fabricated components.
- Develop and maintain manufacturing processes and process instructions to support production.
- Assist manufacturing teams with product ramp-up activities and production support.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support product development, prototyping, testing, and validation activities.
- Manage projects through all phases, including design, prototype development, scheduling, and final validation.
- Provide technical support to customers and internal stakeholders as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline with a specialization in mechanical design for rotating machinery.
- Minimum of 5–10 years of experience using SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
- Minimum of 5–10 years of experience designing rotating machinery, including bearing selection, tolerancing, and mechanical fit requirements.
- Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
- Experience working with thermal and mechanical Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software preferred.
- Machine design experience preferred.
- Experience working in a manufacturing environment supporting mechanical assemblies preferred.
- Basic knowledge of MRP systems, manufacturing systems, and motor manufacturing requirements preferred.
- Basic understanding of customer interactions and customer support processes preferred.
- Additional professional training in design engineering through universities, standards committees, industry organizations, or CAD software providers preferred.
Work Environment:
- Works in both office and manufacturing environments.
- Frequent collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, quality, customers, and cross-functional project teams.
- Requires strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Must be an effective team player with strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Regular customer interaction is required; therefore, the ability to communicate technical information clearly and professionally is essential.
- Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Requires the ability to establish priorities and maintain project schedules while meeting quality and performance expectations.
- Responsible for complete project ownership, including design, prototype development, scheduling, and final validation activities
