Job Summary
The Oxygen Technician (O2 Tech) is responsible for inspecting, cleaning, maintaining, testing, and certifying life-critical oxygen and breathing air systems. These systems support high-reliability environments such as aviation, space, nuclear, diving, and industrial operations. The technician ensures all equipment is safe, functional, compliant with applicable standards, and properly documented before being returned to service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect, clean, test, and maintain oxygen and breathing air equipment, including cylinders, regulators, converters, fittings, valves, and related components.
- Disassemble and reassemble equipment using approved procedures and simple hand tools.
- Replace consumable and wear components such as O-rings, seals, adapters, and fittings.
- Perform pressure, leak, and functional tests to verify system integrity and safety.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues, identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and verify proper operation after repair.
- Maintain accurate, complete records of inspections, maintenance, repairs, and certifications in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Work primarily within controlled areas, and occasionally within the OICR or other designated workspaces, following all cleanliness and safety protocols.
- Follow strict handling, cleanliness, and contamination-control procedures for oxygen systems.
- Comply with all safety, quality, and regulatory standards applicable to life-support and breathing systems.
- Support audits, inspections, and continuous improvement efforts related to equipment reliability and safety.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certification preferred.
- Mechanical aptitude and experience working with pressurized systems, valves, regulators, or similar equipment.
- Ability to read and follow technical manuals, drawings, and established procedures.
- Basic proficiency with hand tools, measuring devices, and test equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality.
- Ability to accurately document work and maintain traceable records.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with oxygen systems, breathing air systems, or life-critical equipment.
- Experience in regulated industries such as aerospace, defense, nuclear, medical, diving, or industrial gas systems.
- Familiarity with contamination control, cleanroom practices, or oxygen-compatible materials.
- Relevant certifications or military/aviation technical background.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to lift and handle equipment and components up to standard weight limits.
- Manual dexterity required for working with small parts and precision assemblies.
- Visual acuity sufficient for inspections and detailed work.
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily in controlled or clean environments.
- Occasional work in specialized areas such as the OICR.
- Requires strict adherence to safety, cleanliness, and procedural controls due to the life-critical nature of the equipment.
Safety and Compliance
- Must follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Required to maintain high standards of cleanliness and contamination control.
- Responsible for ensuring equipment is safe and certified before release for operational use.
