Job Description
Serving the Mid-South with excellence for over 50 years, Klaasmeyer Construction Company is looking for our next HDD Locator to join the Field Operations team. In this position, you will be tracking the drill head in real time, guiding it to depth and on path, and keeping it clear of the gas, water, and power lines that are buried right alongside our bore corridor.
Requirements:What You’ll Be Doing
- Operating electronic bore tracking systems — walkover and wireline — to monitor drill head position, depth, pitch, and roll throughout every bore
- Walking the bore path above ground during active drilling and feeding real-time guidance to the HDD Operator
- Confirming depth and clearance at every utility crossing before the drill advances through it — no exceptions
- Reviewing bore plans and utility locate sheets before each bore so you know exactly what's in the ground
- Directing steering corrections to keep the bore on path and within depth tolerance
- Calling it when something doesn't look right underground — and backing that call up
- Keeping your tracking equipment calibrated, inspected, and ready to perform
- Logging bore data, depth readings, and utility crossings accurately on every job
What We Need From You
- 1–3 years of verifiable HDD locating experience in a production field environment
- Hands-on experience with electronic bore tracking systems — walkover and/or wireline
- Working knowledge of HDD operations — you understand what the operator is doing and why your guidance matters
- Experience locating through congested utility corridors with multiple crossing conflicts
- Ability to read bore plans, utility locate sheets, and depth/pitch data in real time
- Strong communicator — clear, precise, and consistent under field pressure
- OSHA 10 preferred; OSHA 30 a plus
- Traffic Control / Flagger certification required or obtained within 30 days
- Valid driver's license required; CDL a plus
- Willing to travel for projects when needed; overnight stay required when needed
The Physical Reality
You'll be walking the bore path, carrying tracking equipment, bending down for depth readings, and staying locked in on the data for the full duration of every bore — in whatever weather the job site brings.
- Continuous walking above the bore path during active drilling operations
- Carrying locating equipment and gear across job sites throughout the workday
- Frequent bending and kneeling for depth readings and equipment access
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions for full shift durations
- Sustained focus and concentration required throughout every active bore
- Regular exposure to HDD rig operations, underground utilities, traffic, and construction site hazards
This is a safety-sensitive position subject to pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol testing per company policy.
