Job Description

Position Summary
Eagle Title is looking for a Director of Underwriting to lead our Underwriting and Title Examination team, while strengthening underwriting knowledge across the organization.

This is a leadership role for someone who combines deep title and underwriting expertise with a solution-oriented, business-minded approach. We’re looking for a leader who runs toward difficult transactions, develops strong people, improves how we work, and looks for "How can we?" solutions that responsibly help viable transactions reach the closing table.

WHAT YOU’LL LEAD

  • Lead, coach, and develop Eagle Title’s Underwriting and Title Examination team with clear expectations, accountability, and measurable performance goals.
  • Serve as a senior escalation point for complex title, underwriting, and high-risk transaction matters for both residential and commercial transactions.
  • Establish consistent underwriting standards and clear levels of decision-making authority so the right decisions can be made by the right people without unnecessary escalation.
  • Maintain clear underwriting policies, procedures, decision standards, quality controls, and supporting resources.
  • Identify underwriting, fraud, quality, and operational risks before they become larger problems.
  • Work collaboratively with Processing, Title Examination, Settlement, Post-Closing, Finance, Operations, Sales, Training, executive leadership, title insurance underwriters, underwriting counsel, and outside counsel.

Use technology, data, training, and process improvement to solve problems at the root, reduce unnecessary handoffs, and continuously raise the standard of service.

Teach a Person to Fish: develop the knowledge, judgment and confidence of others so expertise grow throughout Eagle Title, rather than living with one person or department.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Strong knowledge of real estate title, title insurance, and underwriting risk.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve complex title matters.
  • Proven leadership experience, including coaching, accountability, performance management, and employee development.
  • Strong judgment and the ability to balance risk, business needs, and exceptional client service.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to make complex issues understandable and actionable.
  • 5+ years of title insurance, underwriting, or real estate experience preferred.
  • Experience working with multiple title insurance underwriters and title production technology such as Qualia is preferred.
  • Juris Doctor and Maryland Bar admission required.

HOW WE THINK ABOUT THE ROLE

At Eagle Title, Underwriting should be more than the department that tells people what they can’t do. We want a leader who starts with “How can we?” while protecting our clients, our employees, our underwriters, and Eagle Title.

We believe knowledge makes us better partners. This leader should not just have the answers. They should teach people how to find them, build better judgment throughout the organization, and make the people around them stronger.

The right person will be a teacher, problem solver, collaborator, and leader who does the right thing, raises the standard, and runs toward the hard stuff.
