Job Description
Area Manager
Sabine Surveyors is currently seeking an Area Manager in the Houston, TX area!
About us
Sabine Surveyors is a full-service marine surveying and consulting company founded in 1968. Our services include bulk and project cargo surveys, hull and machinery surveys, damage surveys, P&I surveys, on-hire, and off-hire bunker and/or vessel condition surveys, vessel appraisals, vessel audits, management audits, shipyard representation services, CRF 46 Subchapter M Compliance services and vendor audits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for the following; other duties may be assigned as required:
- Coordinating the work of staff surveyors to ensure a balanced workload, proper assignments according to experience, cross-training whenever possible, and time off when needed.
- Performing marine surveys on a direct basis as needed.
- Ensuring the timely flow of information to/from clients including monitoring receipt of assignments, acknowledgement of assignments to clients, and ensuring preliminary advice is prepared and submitted after completion of fieldwork.
- Producing and submitting concise, technical, and grammatically correct final survey reports based on the appropriate report template in line with Company procedures and schedules and the customers’ requirements.
- Participating in the formulation and administration of company policies and developing long range goals and objectives.
- Assisting management in developing assumptions regarding the volumes of business that could be expected under the current business plan and under alternative strategies.
- Handling of customer complaints and adjustment of invoices.
- Promoting company services in the marine industry including visiting clients and participating in industry activities.
- Supervising on-going training to staff surveyors including monthly safety meetings.
- Representing the interests of surveyors to upper management in the areas of time utilization, training, safety, compensation, benefits, and morale.
- Assisting the President in the preparation of the annual budget.
- Pursuing personal development through training.
- Ensuring that proper PPE is maintained and worn at all times as required.
- Ensuring all required equipment is calibrated and in good working order and records maintained as per our Quality and Environmental Procedures.
- Obtaining proper credentials to enter terminals, docks, and job sites as appropriate, and maintain records as required by Company procedures.
Required Education & Experience:
- Degree in a related field plus five (5) years of experience, or seagoing experience to Chief Officer level, or ten (10) years of experience in a similar position.
- Membership in NAMS Global or a similar organization dedicated to professionalism, ethics, and continuing education within the marine industry.
- Report and technical writing skills will be a consideration.
- Current valid driver’s license.
- Current valid Transportation Worker’s Identification Credential (TWIC)
Working Conditions:
- Open-air conditions such as noisy, hot, cold, wet, dusty, etc.
- Must wear hearing, eye, and head protection and proper PPE.
- Some climbing (40’ or higher, some unprotected), bending, stooping, and lifting (50 pounds) are involved.
- Working with hot and sometimes hazardous materials.
- Working on marine vessels, docks, warehouses, yards, or in shipyard settings, walking over uneven surfaces.
- Enter round manholes with inside diameters of 18”, and other internally confined spaces.
- Traverse gangways, ladders, and scaffolding at varying heights.
- Examine cargo, including photographing, and accessing difficult areas.
- Available/On call 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

- Ability to motivate surveyor/sampler workforce.
- Commitment to company values, policies, and safety program.
- Must be competent in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of PowerPoint and Microsoft Teams.
